My Journey to Becoming Feva, the Hair Stylist
I’m Geneca “Feva” Goldsby, and my journey to becoming a renowned hair stylist and community leader is a story I’m proud to share.
Growing up, I was fascinated by Patti LaBelle’s wild hairstyles. As a young girl, I’d duplicate her styles, even getting in trouble for using too much hairspray and experimenting with small irons to create big curls. Even at just seven years old my mom saw my gift, but I didn’t know it would become my career.
I remember those early days, my sister would style my hair. That’s where I it started at. She could do it so well, but she’d only do half my head at a time. I’d be left with a half-done hairstyle, and I had to learn to replicate what she did. I practiced and practiced until I became good at it. Really good.
By 16, I was at Job Corps, and my passion for hair styling took off. I started doing everyone’s hair – my mom’s, my sister’s, cousins’, friends’, and even strangers! By then I was getting paid for my services, and my confidence soared. This was a pivotal turning point in my life. I knew I had found my calling.
By the time I was 22 years old I was running a salon. This was the most exciting and trying at the same time in my business at that time. With no high school diploma or formal education beyond eighth grade, I had to learn quickly. I read books, studied people, and adapted to making money, but business-wise, I was clueless. As a young, uneducated entrepreneur, I faced numerous challenges. I had to grow up fast and become responsible and that was the real challenge. Nonetheless. I made it work. I was really running a salon, despite the odds that were stacked up against me. I had no idea that word of mouth spread my name faster then a wildfire, and I became known as the go-to girl for hair. That’s when “Feva” was born.
All while I was building my beauty career. I had no idea that God would bubble something up inside of me that will cause me to commit the most selfless act, which is give back to young girls. Mentoring young girls wasn’t something I chose; it chose me. As I established my salon, I couldn’t help but notice the young girls walking down the street with their hair unkempt, bad attitudes, and a testy demeanor. It broke my heart to see them heading in the wrong direction. I remembered the old saying, “When you look good, you feel good,” and I knew I had to act.
I started offering free hair services to these young girls, with their mothers’ permission, of course. And what a transformation! Not only did their appearance change, but their attitudes and personalities shifted too. They exuded confidence and positivity. I saw an opportunity to make a deeper impact, so I began inviting them to help out around the salon, teaching them new skills, and keeping them off the streets. I wanted to protect them from the dangers that lurked outside.
Those young girls became my babies, and I took it upon myself to guide them, support them, and show them a better way. I spent countless hours with them, sharing my experiences, and helping them navigate life’s challenges. It wasn’t just about hair; it was about empowering them to become the best versions of themselves. And as I watched them grow and thrive, I knew that this was my true calling – to make a difference in the lives of these young girls and help them unlock their full potential.
Today, I’m proud of my legacy. It’s not just about hair; it’s about making a difference. I hope my story inspires others to chase their dreams, no matter how impossible they seem.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has it been a smooth road? Far from it. But I’ve learned that those rough patches are just learning curves, essential to growth and success. You can’t skip the struggles and expect to reach the top. I’ve faced my fair share of challenges, but one of the most daunting was being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at 29. I woke up paralyzed, my entire left side numb. It was as if my world had been turned upside down.
I had just invented a new hair peice and was to travel to Atlanta to learn the production side of the business. But instead, I found myself bedridden for six months, unable to move or work. My business, my passion, my everything was put on hold. I had to shut down my business, leaving my clients searching for a stylist that could take care of them. Needless to say my finances suffered, my credit was destroyed, and I lost everything I had worked for.
But even in the darkest moments, I refused to give up. I used that time to reevaluate my life, to think about what I wanted to achieve, and how I could do it despite my new reality. I became innovative, thinking of new ways to earn a living, new ways to stay in the beauty industry that I loved. And that’s when things started to fall into place.
I realized that the disease didn’t define me. I was more than multiple sclerosis. I was a strong, capable, and determined woman, and I would not let this roadblock hold me back. I would find a way to overcome it, to thrive despite it. And that’s exactly what I did.

How do you think about luck?
Luck has not played a significant role in my life and business. Instead, I believe that my thoughts, words, and actions have shaped my journey. I’ve worked tirelessly to build myself up as a woman, entrepreneur, and thought leader. Through dedication and hard work, I’ve expanded my knowledge, vocabulary, and expertise, becoming an international life coach and beauty consultant.
While I’ve achieved many of my written goals, others have emerged as a result of my desires and dedication. I believe in the power of manifestation, where speaking and writing down goals can bring them to life. Favor has played a role in my success, but it’s not just about luck – it’s about being prepared, working hard, and staying focused on my objectives.
In essence, I believe that we create our own luck through our thoughts, words, and actions. By maintaining a positive mindset, speaking positively, and taking deliberate steps towards our goals, we can manifest our desires and achieve success.
