Rising Stars: Meet Max Sauer of STL

Today we’d like to introduce you to Max Sauer

Hi Max, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hi, I’m Max, and I’ve been playing music in and around St. Louis for a few decades now. My band, Starwolf, has existed since 2016, and we just released our third album, Tropical Disco. Now we’re in the process of preparing for our album release show which takes place on November 9th at Off Broadway.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think that any journey has its ups and downs. I wouldn’t say that it’s all been ‘smooth’, but I will say that I love what I do, and I feel lucky that I get to keep writing, recording, and playing music with my friends. It’s something the three of us are very passionate about, and we’re grateful for everyone who supports us!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in writing funky songs with my friends, Chris Rhein and Tim Moore. Together we form Starwolf. I’m proud of the work we’ve done together, such as our newest album, Tropical Disco. (Now streaming everywhere). We had the pleasure of working with some insanely talented people on our new album, such as legendary bassist Tim Lefebvre (David Bowie, Empire of the Sun), and the album was mixed by our long-time collaborator, Jason Kingsland (Washed Out, Belle & Sebastian). We started working on our latest album during the pandemic, and were able to work with other musicians remotely from all around the world. The album was influenced by our love of 1970’s funk, disco, bossa nova, etc. If you need some disco/funk in your life, please come to our album release show!

How do you think about luck?
I think that luck only finds you if you’re willing to put yourself out there, which takes a lot of work and persistence. You have to accept that plans often fall apart, and the only thing you can 100% control is your attitude and your response to all of the hurdles that get thrown your way. I feel incredibly lucky to be playing music still, and to have friends who feel the same.

Pricing:

  • Our new album is on vinyl and costs $25
  • Our album release show on Nov. 9th at Off Broadway is only $20
