Daily Inspiration: Meet Aignee’ Lashay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aignee’ Lashay

Hi Aignee’, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I wasn’t always the girl who was heavy into makeup. Typically I was the lip gloss only kind of girl unless I was participating in a pageant or cheerleading/dance performances. Fortunately makeup and its lasting impact found me during a hard time in my life. Back in April of 2013 I was a new college student and mom to my son who was a very active 1 year old. I had broken my ankle roller skating while celebrating my little brothers birthday. That injury left me depressed. I was so use to being active with my son. I loved getting us dressed to go places and that changed. Being stuck in the house with a broken ankle lead me to YouTube. I’ve always enjoyed drawing and anything else to do with creativity so there’s no shock that face painting videos were the first thing that kept popping up, I dived head first into face painting and traditional makeup followed. Learning those new skills gave me another reason to get out of bed everyday. It gave me my confidence back. The amount of joy I received from that couldn’t be kept for myself. I wanted to share it with others. I worked for a few major makeup retailers but it was during my freelancing that I really got to make lasting impact and relationships with the people I’ve been so lucky to service. I get to meet so many people who have similar stories to mine or just need a boost. I take pride in being their safe place. I love being able to boost their confidence and enhance the beauty they already possess. Makeup is therapy for me but for them as well.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been smooth at all. Entrepreneurship is one of the toughest things in the world. The makeup industry can be cutthroat and you have to stay focused, be humble and never lose sight of yourself or your values. Makeup artistry is never ending and you should always be learning. Although I started out self taught I had to put in the work and when I wanted to learn more I had to seek professional education to further my knowledge. Building your brand is tough. Getting through the slow season is hard. Learning the ins and outs of ownership can be challenging but my God it’s all worth it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
What I love most about my profession is that it’s Art & Art is subjective. Everyone may not like it but there’s a whole bunch of people who love and get it. Those are my people! I think what sets me apart is that I can do all types of makeup I.e. sfx, bridal, soft glam, etc. give me the canvas and I will execute! I’m most proud that my children get to witness what it’s like to go after your dream and be successful at it. All of my children love telling everyone that their mom is a makeup artist. My girls are especially proud of me and it’s so heartwarming to see them interested and actively learning what I do.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My children and clients deserve all the credit. Without their continued support I wouldn’t be where I am today. My kids hype me up and love my work. My clients have stayed the course from day one. They know some of the struggles I endured on this journey yet they still believe in me and my artistry. I’m forever grateful for them!
