Life & Work with Susan Shier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Shier

Hi Susan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
12 years ago, I started with nothing but an idea and a dream.

My journey began as a side hustle.

It all started while I was helping a friend.
She paid me to help her with a newsletter for a few hours a week.

“If you had three of me, you’d have a full-time job,” she said.
It had been 6 months of no next corporate gig in site after being laid off.

That one comment sparked an idea—and Peace of Mind Assistants was born.

I partnered with a friend and branded ourselves as “personal and professional assistants.”

We did everything from managing emails to house-sitting, not knowing back then that the concept of a “niche” would soon become important.

I realized I wasn’t cut out to be in a partnership and parted ways with my partner.

This allowed me to lean more into what truly inspired me – tools, systems, and managing back-end administration for a business.

I began focusing on technology for one-person businesses.

12 Lessons from 12 Years in Business

1. Just start—Even if you don’t have it all figured out.
2. You’ll never be 100% ready—Do it anyway.
3. Success looks different for everyone.
4. Things will change, and that’s good.
5. Small side hustles can grow big.
6. Work together, don’t compete.
7. Let your values lead you.
8. It’s okay to ask for help.
9. REST – but don’t quit.
10. Celebrate every win.
11. Believe in yourself.
12. Keep showing up.

Every step I took brought me closer to building a business that aligns
with WHO I TRULY AM and WHAT MAKES ME HAPPY.

Twelve years later, I have re-branded to GO SIMPLE. It’s been a ride.

If you’re starting out, remember—that every small step adds up.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. No start-up business is smooth.

Starting with nothing but an idea and navigating the unknowns was tough. In the early days, I struggled with finding clients, balancing different types of work, and wondering if I could really do this.

One major challenge was deciding to end the partnership I had with a friend. It wasn’t easy, but I realized that I needed to lean into what truly lit me up—technology, systems, and managing the behind-the-scenes operations of a business. Letting go of that partnership allowed me to refocus and grow the business in a way that aligned with my values and strengths.

Another challenge was learning to adapt. When I first started, I offered a bit of everything—house-sitting, organizing, email management—without narrowing down my services. It took me a while to realize that I needed to focus on my strengths and specialize in helping solopreneurs manage their backend operations.

There were also moments when I felt overwhelmed and doubted myself. The pressure to keep the business going was intense, especially in the early years. I had to learn to trust the process, take breaks when needed, and ask for help when I felt stuck.

Looking back, each struggle helped me refine my approach and build a business that aligns with who I am today. The road may have been bumpy, but every challenge led to growth and pushed me toward a business that felt authentic to me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I partner with coaches and solopreneurs to streamline their operations by managing platforms, taking over admin tasks, and optimizing workflows.

My goal is to bring clarity and calm to your business so you can focus on what you do best—coaching and growing your business. Whether it’s platform setup, email management, or creating systems that save you time, I customize everything to your unique needs.

What are your plans for the future?
I’m not planning to slow down anytime soon, and I love the hustle (most of the time).

Looking ahead, I focus on continuing to grow GO SIMPLE in a way aligned with my mission of helping solopreneurs streamline their operations and reclaim their time. I want to expand my reach by offering more customized solutions for clients who are overwhelmed by their businesses’ backends but are ready to simplify their processes and get organized.

One exciting change I’m planning is launching new digital tools and resources, like templates and systems, that clients can use to manage their workflows more efficiently. I’m also exploring group workshops and training to help more people, at scale, learn the systems I’ve developed over the years.

Another big focus is deepening my expertise in automation tools. As technology continues to evolve, I see huge opportunities to help clients automate more of their work so they can focus on growth and creativity rather than getting bogged down in day-to-day tasks.

I’m also looking forward to refining my brand and continuing to build a community of like-minded solopreneurs who value simplicity, efficiency, and balance. The future feels like an open canvas, and while I’m excited about growth, I’m just as focused on staying true to my values and the core of why I started in the first place—helping people make their business lives easier and more enjoyable.
