Exploring Life & Business with Brooke A. Mulholland of Brooke A. Mulholland Makeup Artistry LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke A. Mulholland

Hi Brooke A., we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story on how I got to where I am today honestly feels just like that, a story. It’s been a long journey, and I joke that my life could be a movie. But for the sake of this interview, I’ll keep it brief.

I am the youngest of 6 girls. Yes, we have the same parents. Yes, I grew up in a Christian household. & no, I don’t have a favorite. Growing up with so many women, you would think makeup would have been second nature. But my mom has never worn makeup and by the time I could wear it, scene kids were all the rage. So that’s not saying much…

Sure, I would steal my sister’s shimmery bronzer that made me look like I should be in the movie Twilight, but that was the extent of it. It started with black raccoon eyed eyeliner and a mousse foundation that I can still imagine the texture so vividly, it’s no wonder I had bad acne. It wasn’t until I was in my junior year of highschool that I discovered makeup was genuinely something I enjoyed doing, and would later pursue.

This isn’t something I tend to advertise, but it is part of my story that I would never change to this day. I was a highschool drop out my junior year. You might be wondering why, but that’s for another day. I got my GED and decided to enroll in Esthetics School to learn more about being a makeup artist. & well, the rest is history.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting out was only rough because I intended on working for others. It wasn’t until I started working for myself that made the journey easier. It didn’t feel like a job at all, but a side hustle I genuinely enjoyed. Still to this day it doesn’t feel like a job, but a fun way to pass the time and make people happy. Me included.

I didn’t know my makeup journey would flourish the way it did, and I think that’s why the road was so smooth compared to most. I’ve mentioned this before, but I truly can’t imagine starting out these days with social media being the way it is now. When 10 years ago, there weren’t many of us posting before and afters getting traction. Blessed is an understatement.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I pride my business for being inclusive. Never will I ever turn a client away because of the color of their skin. Too many times than not have I heard horror stories from clients not given a service because the artist simply couldn’t perform the service due to being uneducated.

My makeup style is considered soft glam. It’s enough makeup that you can see it on camera, but not too much, that way it looks great in person, too. I love being somewhere inbetween natural, yet glam makeup.

Something I think that sets me apart from others is that I have a license in esthetics. This allows me to service your skin concerns prior to makeup application. I always tell my clients that makeup will only look as good as your skin underneath. I have heard the term “cakey” tossed around so many times that it’s lost its meaning. What it really means is that your skin is dehydrated, needs a double cleanse, exfoliation a serum or two and moisture. I recently started offering lash lifts and tints, brow lamination, wax and tints, hydrafacials amongst a few, and who doesn’t love a good dermaplane?

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
My favorite book to date is “Resisting Happiness” by Matthew Kelly. The first page is enough to get your butt moving and motivated. The older I get, the more push I need. It is just the book you need if you’re struggling to find the motivation in life we all crave.
