Today we’d like to introduce you to James Lewis
James, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my journey with a passion for graphic design and photography, building Boiled Teeth LLC from the ground up in Kansas City. My focus was always on creating art that speaks to people, while pushing the boundaries of creativity. Over time, I expanded my skill set into various creative fields, from video production to scriptwriting, constantly striving to tell impactful stories.
Today, as the creative director of The Black Umbrella (TBU TV), I get to combine my love for creativity with community engagement. It’s been a blast working on projects that showcase the untapped potential of Kansas City while addressing important topics like mental health and social issues. Being part of TBU has allowed me to grow both as an artist and a person, all while making a difference.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but that’s all part of the journey. Learning new skills, adapting to challenges, and growing through every project has been a constant part of the process. From balancing creativity with community impact to figuring out the best ways to amplify Kansas City’s untold stories, every step comes with its own set of hurdles.
But so far, I’m enjoying the road, especially alongside the TBU team. We’re slowly building something powerful that I believe will leave a lasting impact on Kansas City’s community.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a graphic designer, photographer, and filmmaker. My specialty lies in turning intangible ideas into tangible art, whether it’s creating the perfect logo or capturing the essence of a moment in an image. My goal is to bring these visions to life in a way that truly represents the heart of the idea.
What I’m most proud of is the community I get to be part of and the impact my work has on it. What sets me apart from others is my commitment to going the extra mile, ensuring that every interaction with me is not just memorable, but meaningful.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My biggest advice is: don’t stop being yourself. The most valuable content you can create is original content. Be true to who you are and don’t change that. Your audience, your village, will come in due time.
Hard work is a slow process, but it brings the best rewards. Trust me, I wouldn’t be here saying this if I didn’t have those nights where I wanted to give up, where it felt like my work wasn’t being noticed. That’s not true—people will see your work and respect the dedication and effort you put in. So keep going.
