Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashleigh Bouselli
Hi Ashleigh, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The story behind Rose Hill Harvest’s beginning is kind of a funny one!
A short backstory is that my middle son has suffered from terrible skin issues since he was a baby. We had tried everything to soothe his poor skin over the years. A couple of years ago I was “influenced” on Instagram to try out tallow balms on his skin. I am not exaggerating when I say his skin cleared up faster than I had ever seen. I was sold. Unfortunately, the product I was purchasing was very pricey and not sustainable for us so I thought I would give it a try making it myself.
After a year of making tallow balms for my son, my husband was getting ready for hunting season and was trying to make room in the freezer. But it was FULL of my frozen rendered tallow blocks. He off-hand mentioned maybe I should try and sell my balms to clear out some space.
The next week I made a batch and posted about them on my Instagram and Facebook pages and to my utter delight several people purchased jars! I was able to sign up for a holistic pop-up event a few days later and sold out of my tallow balms. It has kind of snowballed from there, with different vendor events, stores, and farmer’s markets.
Making and selling tallow balms was never on my radar, but to the glory of God, he has provided both a salve for my son’s skin and a creative outlet for me!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My expectations were very low in the beginning (and I try to keep them that way). It is always a little frightening putting yourself out there and having to “sell”. I can be pretty introverted, so making and selling my tallow does push me out of my comfort zone a bit, but it is always amazing to hear when someone loves your products.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I run a local business, Rose Hill Harvest, where I make and sell locally harvested, small-batch handcrafted tallow balms and soaps. Tallow is making more of a name for itself in the last few months. It is a great moisturizer and a natural alternative to synthetic-based ones. We infuse our tallow balms with herbs that are shown to be beneficial to the skin. I am super proud of myself for doing something scary and starting a business. It has been a year of learning and adjusting as I also homeschool our three kids and try to make time and space for my business.
