Daily Inspiration: Meet Kelly Stover

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Stover

Hi Kelly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Riverside Sweets got its start 25 years ago by my parents, Jim and Kathy Brown, after searching for a fun business that the whole family could participate in. When they decided to retire in 2020, they sold it to me and a long-term employee, Angela Wiechens. Not much has changed over the years in the way that we make our candies from scratch, but we have had fun creating several new and different flavors and varieties recently as well. We make 17 different flavors of fudge, 3 kinds of brittle, 9 different barks, popcorn candies, toffee, homemade caramel for our apples and turtles, and a large variety of hand-dipped chocolates. We also sell a large variety of candies that we don’t make on site, like taffy, Jelly Belly, and hard candies. We carry 16 flavors of ice cream year-round in our main store upstairs and an additional 8 flavors in our downstairs ice cream parlor in the warmer months. We also have seasonal gifts and decor that we change out throughout the year, that helps make our space look extra cozy.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Well, Angela and I took over the business on 4/1/2020, right in the middle of the Covid lockdown when we couldn’t even have our door open! We created a website with online ordering and offered local curbside deliveries to get us through those tough times. Since then, we’ve had a lot of struggles with ingredient shortages and crazy price increases.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Patience, perseverance, creativity, hard-working
