Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Morgan
Hi Jake, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For as long as I can remember, music has been very prominent in my family; I always tagged along to watch my dad play music with his friends and family in various bands. When I was younger, I liked playing around with my dad’s drum kits, especially the e-kit with all the wacky sound banks hahaha I just enjoyed messing around with any instrument I got my hands on because I simply loved music.
I tried a few sports here and there, and basketball was the only one that stuck with me for a while. That is until my obsession with Guitar Hero and Rock Band started around the ages of 11-12 hahaha I had both Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band 2 for the Wii and I played endlessly!
This soon sparked my passion for guitar and in late 2008, I started taking lessons. I did that for about a year or two, tried forming a couple of bands with a few different friends and had a lot of fun but unfortunately they didn’t work out. Fast forward to November of 2014, I joined a band with a few of my close friends, Jarrett and Caleb, known as UNimagined.
Over the course of 6 years, 50+ shows, signing to Standby Records, recording and releasing our Friendless EP, doing 2 music videos and 4 tours across the US, it all came to a mutual decision to part ways in 2020. Rather than forming a new band, I instead came to the realization that I wanted to help other people form their dreams with music into a reality, thus my journey into audio engineering and songwriting started. After 4 years of hard work and dedication I now run a home studio known as [ DEAD CELL ] Auditory Nanotech Productions!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
A big yes and no hahaha Music will always have its ups and downs. Most notably was whenever my band UNimagined disbanded honestly. It was a very bittersweet moment. I was very unsure of my path because what I thought I wanted at the time was to be in a band, play shows and all of that stuff. It was hard for me to think about or imagine starting completely over from scratch.
Then I realized how much I actually enjoyed the process of songwriting and producing! It took me back to being in high school, always having my 5th Gen iPod on me with Garageband loaded up. In my Study Hall I’d always have headphones in just working on whatever song or beat I had cooked up at the time. I still have that old thing too hahaha But those memories and more are what made me realize, this is it. Granted that is only one of many other struggles along the way, I am very thankful for these moments because that’s why I am where I am today!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I do pretty much all things that have to do with making music! I run my home studio, [ DEAD CELL ] Auditory Nanotech Productions, with this being my first year of doing work with other artists/bands. I offer mixing/mastering, recording/engineering, MIDI programming, and songwriting services for heavier music genres and even produce beats for genres like rap or pop! I am a guitar player of 16 years first and foremost, so I also have a good amount of knowledge to offer when it comes to anything guitar, whether it be recording or writing!
What makes you happy?
Firstly, my girlfriend of 8 years and counting. She has been by my side through thick and thin and is my absolute number one supporter! She’s never doubted me in this endeavor and for that, I am forever grateful for her. She’s a strong woman! Hahaha Secondly, music! Listening to it, going to live shows, playing it, dissecting it, creating it, recording it, you name it! My life has literally always been surrounded by it and I love every aspect of it!
I remember hearing my dad listening to stuff like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd as a child and my mom would always have stuff on the radio like Z1077, so I heard and knew a good portion of the early 2000’s hip-hop, rap and pop hits hahaha I definitely owe it to the music my parents listened to and video game soundtracks for my music taste nowadays.
