Check Out Julie Jordan’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Jordan.

Julie Jordan

Hi Julie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Trying to figure out what you want to do the rest of your life at 17 is ridiculous. I wanted to do art but didn’t know any direction that would also afford me the ability to support myself and one day my mom said you should do hair. I shrugged and laughed her off but something just kept saying go to the cosmetology school and see what it’s about. I enrolled on the spot and never regretted it a minute, we’ll maybe a few minutes during pin curls and finger waving….. I loved it all and wanted to keep learning, cutting was like sculpture to me and I loved it, color was a form of painting and I got to use my art background, nothing could have been a better fit.
Now I am 20 years into my career and I am still learning and thriving. I have a salon suite that is thriving and also gives me the freedom to be an educator, an artist and travel.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t think any road is smooth when you work hard and strive for the best. I am never satisfied, I always want to learn more, do more and be more. My guests deserve the best version of me and that version is always evolving and changing. I have autoimmune disorders to include Crohns and Ulcerative Colitius, I have had multiple surgeries, emergencies and medical ups and downs that have created many challenges for me and myself behind the chair. It has also showed me how to be humble and empathetic as well as how to persevere.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the most proud of my relationships with my guests. It’s easy in this new social media world to forget our guests come first. It’s not about me it’s about being trusted in such a way that someone else puts how they look and feel into your hands. If my guests had the opportunity to speak about me I hope they speak to my character and my integrity.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I have met so many wonderful mentors in my career and time behind the chair. I have always tried to learn from those around me I strive to be more like. If I am in a room of people and I am not learning it’s time to find a new room.

Pricing:

  • Charge your worth but understand your worth and value. Just because you want to charge $500 doesn’t mean you have earned the right to charge it
  • Be open in discussing pricing if you are not comfortable discussing money why would your guest be comfortable paying it
  • Late fees and cancellation fees can usually be waived. Have one on one discussions with guests that have been late or canceled often, don’t go on soap box with all of your guests especially on social media about cancelation and no shows, the ears that need to hear it won’t. Talk to them directly!
