Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Saladin
Hi Alyssa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My photography journey started at a very young age. My mother bought me my very first digital camera at the age of 8, which quickly captivated me. I took a special interest in exploring my backyard, looking for anything interesting to photograph; which usually ended up being bugs. Some of my fondest images I captured in my early days were of a jumping spider eating a praying mantis hatchling and some bees pollinating my mom’s hollyhock bush in the front yard.
It was a few years later that I started entering my photos in competitions at the local county and state fair. My photos did fairly well, earning me several ribbons as well as a sweepstakes award. This was a turning point for me, realizing that this passion could be more than a hobby if I put in the work.
Fast forward to high school. I had the opportunity to apply for dual enrollment during my junior and senior year at Tulsa Technology Center in their 2-year photography program. It was a stressful few months waiting for my acceptance letter as this program only accepted 40 students. Opening that letter and seeing that they wanted me to join the program was the most amazing feeling. I had this amazing door open in front of me that could truly change the direction of my life. From there I went on to take a semester of darkroom photography in college which really gave me an appreciation for taking my time with each shot since you can only take so many photos with a roll of film.
During those years, I enjoyed learning with like-minded creatives and exploring my passions in a new light which gave me the building blocks for the skills I use today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely had its ups and downs. In 2021, I moved from Oklahoma to Missouri. Since I was new to the area and no one knew who I was I had to rebuild my business from the ground up.
My biggest support in getting over this hurdle was networking with other photographers. We’d have coffee get-togethers, chat about our craft, favorite shooting locations, and exchange advice on navigating the St. Louis photography scene.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in couples portraits, graduating seniors, as well as micro weddings/elopements,
I am most proud of the connections I make with all of my clients. A lot of people worry about being awkward in front of the camera, or warn me that they don’t know how to pose. I pride myself on easing any worries my clients may have. I myself am also someone who tends to be introverted, so I recognize how being your authentic self may feel a little awkward in front of a camera; especially when that’s not something you’re used to doing.
I always like to take a few moments before I start photographing to just chat with the person I’m working with to understand their goals for the shoot. This way, they can get to know me, so I don’t feel so much like a stranger and more like a friend who’s there to hype them up for the awesome photos we’re about to take.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Being empathetic is incredibly important. Connecting with my clients on a deeper level, understanding their wants, desires, and personality is crucial.
These details make a huge difference in the final product and allow me to authentically tell their story through my photos.
