Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Erickson
Hi Abby, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I first discovered photography in 2016 as a fun hobby, but it wasn’t until 2018 that I fell in love with shooting weddings, which inspired me to start my own business. At the time, I was still in college, but I knew without a doubt that I would go full-time with my photography career as soon as I graduated. From the very beginning, I’ve been drawn to documentary-style photography, capturing candid moments that reveal the genuine emotions and connections shared between people and their loved ones. Each shot tells a story, reflecting the unique bond of those involved. By blending posed portraits with unfiltered, authentic interactions, my goal is to create a visual narrative that truly captures the essence of a couple’s special day.
My couples are always my #1 priority—their experience means everything to me. With that focus, I’ve worked tirelessly to ensure they receive photos they will cherish for a lifetime. I’m incredibly grateful for the recognition I’ve received, having been featured in publications like Green Wedding Shoes, Carats and Cake, and St. Louis Bride. I’ve also been honored to be voted #1 wedding photographer in St. Louis twice by A-List St. Louis Magazine (2021 & 2022), and to be named one of the top five wedding photographers in Missouri in 2024 by Wezoree.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been an easy journey. As I mentioned earlier, I had planned to transition to full-time photography after college graduation—except my graduation was in May 2020. As you can imagine, stepping into full-time business during the height of the pandemic brought its own set of challenges. Many couples were postponing their weddings or making drastic changes to their original plans, and it was a lot to navigate. But throughout it all, my focus remained on making sure my couples felt supported and cared for—and that unwavering commitment is what helped me persevere. They supported me, and I supported them, and together, we made it through. In the end, that experience only strengthened my business and deepened the connections with the couples I work with.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in weddings, capturing timeless portraits that blend personalized storytelling with artistic vision. In addition to weddings, I also shoot lifestyle sessions, including engagement, family, newborn, and maternity sessions. My approach ensures a smooth, stress-free experience from booking to delivery, with clear and easy communication throughout. As a photographer who works primarily with digital, I also incorporate film creatively when the moment calls for it. I focus on capturing genuine emotions and the connections between subjects, paying close attention to the details that make each moment unique. My signature style results in distinctive, recognizable images that are both beautiful and true to life. Above all, I love capturing candid moments with minimal interference, allowing the authenticity of each experience to shine through.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe the most important quality to my success is genuinely caring about my clients. Building authentic connections with them and truly understanding their needs allows me to provide a personalized and meaningful experience. It’s not just about taking beautiful photos—it’s about making sure they feel valued, heard, and supported throughout the entire process. That personal investment in their experience is what helps create lasting relationships and leads to unforgettable moments captured in my work.
In addition, I think it’s essential to be willing to work hard and continuously learn. The world of photography is always evolving, and staying on top of new techniques, trends, and technology is key to delivering the best for my clients. I’m always striving to grow, whether it’s refining my craft, exploring new creative ideas, or improving the way I serve my couples. The combination of caring deeply and staying committed to constant improvement is what has helped me build a business that I’m truly proud of.
