Meet Cassidy Mortimer of St Charles, MO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassidy Mortimer

Hi Cassidy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
This past summer in 2024, while living in Austin, TX, I helped throw a baby shower for my best friend, featuring a “Sweet Pea” theme for her baby, Penelope. In my Pinterest searches, I discovered the unique idea of painted brown paper banners, which perfectly matched our theme. I decided to embrace my creativity and make one, and it turned out wonderfully! This experience reignited my passion for creativity, which I felt I had lost since becoming a mom in 2023.
As a former elementary teacher, I loved creating, and it felt amazing to find that outlet again. After making signs for a few friends’ events just for fun, we moved to Missouri for my husband’s job and to be closer to family. Encouraged by my husband and loved ones, I decided to start my own small business, Petals and Pigment.
This venture has connected me with our community and allowed me to prioritize my mental health. Each night, after I put my toddler to bed, I cherish the hours spent turning my brain off and painting—it brings me immense peace and joy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting this small business has been a significant learning experience, deepening my respect for small business owners and the time it takes to build success. The biggest struggle has been gaining momentum in a new city where I initially knew very few people. However, I am discovering that St. Louis has a supportive and welcoming small business community that encourages newcomers right from the start.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in creating custom, large-scale banners and signs for a variety of occasions, including birthdays, baby showers, weddings, retirement parties, and more. Clients begin by filling out a Google Form to place their order, sharing key ideas for their event. I then design a mock-up using Canva for their approval.
Once we finalize the design, they can choose between brown construction paper (usually in a 3×5 ft size) or foam board for their painted sign. I custom mix colors and incorporate blending and shading to achieve the desired look. After completion, the signs are either picked up or delivered for their event.

I take pride in my design creativity, transforming a few key elements or inspiration pictures from clients into a cohesive piece of art. As my business grows, I’m excited to expand my offerings to include large coloring sheets, painted personalized gift bags, and more.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I feel like I am still “starting out” in a way but if I’ve learned anything, it’s to have a great support system behind you and truly have a passion for what you’re doing. Each month will look different as you get yourself going so you have to have passion at the front to drive you.
