Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Langendorf
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My entrepreneurial journey began as a chiropractor. I know chiropractor turned graphic designer doesn’t sound like a common career transition, but my background is in art. I’ve been drawing, sketching, painting and designing since I was very young. I actually switched majors from art to science, when my grandpa became sick, because I wanted to understand the body more and how to help prevent illness as much as possible. However, I truly believe everything happens for a reason. I think I was led down that path to fuel an entrepreneurial fire that had been glowing since I was young.
When I opened my own practice in 2018, I began to market and advertise my business like we were taught in school. However, in 2020 there was a huge shift to market your business on social media even more than before. It became more about educating, building a brand and a business that people could envision themselves utilizing.
I started with my own business. I built a color palette to reflect the aesthetic I wanted to portray- a warm, inviting and joyful space. A brand focused around educating moms and families. I was beginning to understand a brand and the importance of cohesion across social media, websites and in person marketing. Eventually, I closed my practice and worked for other offices making social media graphics, marketing materials, ads and helping manage their marketing. Until one day I had some friends through networking ask me to design a logo for them. And I fell in love with the process. I enjoyed every second of immersing myself in their business to discover who their target audience is, who they are as business owners, what their business goals were and how to curate a brand that could attract more clients for them to reach those goals. It was the perfect blend of creativity, collaboration among business owners, and marketing. The rest was history. Of course over the years I’ve improved my skills, learned the ins and outs of adobe illustrator, implemented an onboarding procedure and refined my client experience. I’m always learning and perfecting my craft, but there’s been such joy in the journey from chiro to creator!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course with any business endeavor there is highs and lows. My biggest hurdle has been imposter syndrome, which I feel like ALOT of entrepreneurs can relate to. Whether you have a degree or not in your field, mindset can be a huge challenge. However, I had a friend and colleague say to me, “Clients don’t care about a piece of paper. It’s about whether or not they like your work. If they like your designs, your degree [or lack there of] won’t stop them from hiring you.” And she was totally right! So, for anyone struggling with imposter syndrome, I recommend you focus on your craft and customer service. Everything else is just gravy!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a brand designer. I specialize in branding and logos for small business owners, typically in a service based industry. Think medspas, chiropractors, therapists, veterinarians, or dentists etc. I tend to work with a lot of female entrepreneurs, which I love because even after our time working together comes to an end, I will continue to cheer you on. I’m your branding bestie and personal business hype gal!
I think one characteristic that makes me stand out is my connection with my clients. I don’t want to just read your mission statement, collect your general ideas and company hex codes to begin my design process. I want to immerse myself in your business, I want to learn your why and back story to building this business and then incorporate anything that makes you stand out from competitors. My goal at the end of the day it to delivery a cohesive brand both you and your target audience is obsessed with. And ultimately helps propel your business toward your goals!
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I’d say the Covid-19 crisis, ultimately led to my career transition. At the time, I had no idea my experience would lead to a new business journey, but I’m so glad it did. Anyone who has been in a similar situation knows when you find your calling, it’s such an incredibly fulfilling moment. I compare it to needing eye glasses. You can kinda see, but you didn’t realize how blurry your vision was until they swiped to number 2 and everything comes into focus! Suddenly you see everything clearly and your path is right there ahead of you.
Don’t get me wrong, I love chiropractic and I don’t regret going to school for it, because I love helping people. However, when I started designing logos everything just clicked into place, like every experience, connection and lesson had a purpose. I was meant for this and I still get to help people. I just had to take an alternate route to get here.
