Check Out Natalie Hensley’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Hensley

Hi Natalie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always had a passion for art since I can remember. Growing up, I recall always drawing. Whether it be in school, while watching tv, or even at almost every family gathering; I had a pad of paper and some form of writing utensil in hand. I always knew I wanted to be an art teacher (I even dressed as one on career day). Somewhere along the way I heard the term “starving artist” and learned about “job security” and decided I needed a more sustainable path.

I graduated from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in fall of 2019 with a marketing degree and no idea how I wanted to use it. I continued to work my retail and bartending job while I figured it out until COVID-19 put everything to a hault. As the world stood still for a bit, I had ample time to pick back up my abandoned passion. I began drawing and painting to fill my time and calm my nerves. I would share it on my social media and began to get some requests. Before I knew it I was painting people’s pets, their homes, kids, etc. I felt like I was filling a deep desire that I had always had within me to create. In 2022, I began teaching paint and sip classes so that others could step into their creative being and the joys of painting.

After teaching several paint and sip classes, there was still one venture that had been calling my name. I knew that Live Wedding Painting would be my next calling, and in 2023 I painted 7 weddings!

I am now a full time painting instructor, live wedding painter, and comission artist. I get asked quite a bit of I ever get to paint from my own imagination or if I’m always painting for other people. The truth is very rarely do I paint something for myself, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. The clients I work with and the memories I have made are so special to me and it’s truly such a rewarding experience that you can’t replicate. Having the opportunity to share what I love is something I’m incredibly grateful for. Each painting I create, art lesson I teach, or paint party I host, carries a story, a moment, and a connection that makes this journey so fulfilling.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I struggled quite a bit (and sometimes still do) with imposter syndrome and just GOING FOR IT! It can be tough and sometimes feel awkward to put yourself out there or try something new, but “Growth never happens inside your comfort zone” and also “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” I’d say I was my own biggest obstacle in my way. Finding courage while also giving myself grace was essential.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in Live Wedding Painting and I paint in realism. Im self taught for the most part. I’m probably most proud of my dedication to the end result of every single piece. I won’t stop until both myself and the client are completely satisfied. This is allowed me to really grow and hone my skillset while also forming lasting relationships.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love this question! Recommend my Live Painting service to a couple you know that’s getting married, set up a private paint party with me, or follow me on social media @natsy.art. I’d love to connect!
