Rising Stars: Meet April Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to April Johnson.

April, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I established Litty Candles LLC in the greater region of Saint Louis, MO, in June 2020. I came up with the idea to make candles since I’ve become truly inspired by making my own personal candle with Candle Fusion, located in Saint Louis, MO, in the Central West End. From that experience, I thought that making my own candles would be an ideal thing to do. I’ve always had a love for candles. During the pandemic, I lost my job right at the start of COVID-19. I was then inspired to take that leap of faith by starting my own candle business “Litty Candles LLC.” I started doing more research on making soy candles and soy wax melts. Eventually, I got into the candle-making process to success, after failed attempts and critical feedback, which encouraged me to keep going and not giving up on my dreams of having worldwide candle shops. Practice makes perfect, believing in myself and determination. I am proud of my ongoing effort and support locally and out of state support as well.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road wasn’t always smooth. When struggles began to surface, I joined Facebook groups within my niche to learn more from professionals who’ve had more experience and seek more inspiration. YouTube was a great help when I didn’t know how to do something correctly. Youtube candle-making influencers I followed “Stanley Handcrafted & Memory Box Candle Co., are a major part of my ongoing growing journey to making soy candle products.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make and sell soy wax candles and wax melts so far. I specialize in making soy candles and wax melts. My career background focuses more on the Bio-pharmaceutical field as a Laboratory Technician and Pharmacy Technician outside of making candles. I’ve always had a strong desire to work in the scientific industry. This keen sense to work in this field has been an impact on me since elementary school. I’ve always enjoyed science and making candles correlates in science as well. I am most proud of setting my mind to do something and achieving those very goals I’ve set for myself, and I always put myself up to a challenge and or goal to keep my ambition on overdrive. There’s nothing in the world we can’t have. I truly believe that putting in the hard work and staying dedicated will grant us our deepest desires.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
YouTube, YouTube, YouTube, especially if you’re a visual learner like myself. I recommend researching different ways since there are so many out there to work with. Experimenting and finding out what works for you is always great. Starting, I wished I knew about the importance of starting up a business account, keeping track of all my business expenses being invested, and keeping track of everything being spent. Quickbooks is a great app that helps greatly with keep track of all of those things.
