Today we’d like to introduce you to Rodney Scott.
Rodney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up in the midwest in the 90’s fashion was always a major part of the culture. From artwork to music to high lights of the city, clothing always seemed to be the factor that tied everything together. After graduation, I wanted to travel the world so I joined the Air Force for a change to see some new places.
After experiancing some fun and not so appealing places, I always reflected on the culture growing up and tried to take that wherever I ended up. Circling back and seeing how tech started to change the world, this concept of Hippie just kept re-emerging. So my interpretation became that our clothing should be just as influential and powerful as the ideas that can take us from poverty to power. It’s all about intellectual freedom.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The creative side generally is a smoother process, especially when you just enjoy the journey but getting your vision out to the world is definitely a process. There’s a lot of noise to compete with when it comes to sharing your vision so as you can imagine, it can be very challenging but once you connect with your intended audience, its a special thing.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m currently freelancing in the digital marketing and creation space. We work with business owners to help expose their brands and create campaigns online. Most often we’re creating powerful messaging and new coloraways for Blk Hippie. We’re known for the simple yet impactful messages our clothing carries. We keep it very minimalistic by ensuring we focus on capturing the culture and being timeless.
Our biggest achievement to date is still being here four years later after re-establishing our mission and a bit of rebranding. The climb is most exciting and our authenticity and simply pushing forward through all obstacles gives an edge in the marketplace.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up for me was always a bit tricky. I was your typical curious and goofy kid trying to find my place in the city streets. I often fell somewhere between popular and unpopular. I defended the “un-cool” kids while trying to run behind the cool kids and always trying to bridge that gap. I listened to a wide array of music from Wu-Tang Clan to OutKast to Jay-Z and wore always experimented with eclectic clothing.
