Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Kasparie.
Hi Kelsey, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am one of the few people whose career kind of fell into their lap. I was diagnosed with psoriasis as an infant and struggled with the physical and mental tolls. I was made fun of in grade in school, teased through my teen years, and it is still a challenge some days as an adult.
While in high school, I started to realize more and more the disconnect between healthcare providers and their patients. Most physicians treated the physical symptoms of a person’s condition, but very few understand how to treat the emotional and mental toll having such a visible condition takes on a person. This is where my skin passion truly started. I decided I wanted to help merge the gap. People struggling with skin conditions needed someone that understood how to treat their skin and how to treat the emotional and mental strain as well. I wanted to gain knowledge on how to treat the skin so I could help anyone struggling. I started this journey in 2012 by attending Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and getting a bachelor’s degree in biology. A month after graduation, I started esthetics school at The Salon Professional Academy in St. Charles. While in school, I started working in the beauty industry at Ulta as a part-time manager.
After graduating from esthetics school in January of 2017, I transitioned into Ulta’s skin therapist, where I worked for two years. While at Ulta I became a Dermalogica expert, was ranked as one of the top estheticians of the company, and made long-lasting relationships with some of the most influential people of my career. In January of 2019, I started working at Amici Medical Spa as their first Licensed Esthetician. I have worked for hand in hand with the owner of the company to grow Amici’s esthetics department. Working there has been my dream job. I am currently the spa manager and lead esthetician of a medical spa that I cannot wait to watch become the top spa in St. Louis. Every day I get to help my clients with their skin. I get to make them feel beautiful and confident from the inside out. I get to heal their soul and their skin like I have always wanted.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My career may have somewhat fallen into my lap, but it wasn’t always easy. The biggest challenge was definitely deciding six months before I graduated from college to start esthetics school. I had always known I wanted to do skin, but the original plan was more of a dermatology route. While working as a scribe in the Emergency Department at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL, I was speaking with a physician assistant student who told me that her sister was in esthetics school after getting a master’s in psychology. I had never heard of an esthetician before.
I started looking into what it was while working. I got off work that night at 2:00 am. I called my mom on the 20-minute drive home and told her I wanted to go to esthetics school instead of physician assistant school. My mom what has always been phenomenal, told me she thought that career sounded exactly like me and she supported me 100%. I called my boyfriend at the time (now my husband), best friend, dad, and siblings to tell them the news. They were all equally supportive and from their, I knew I was going to take the esthetics world by storm even if it didn’t require the bachelor’s degree I had spent four years working on.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Licensed Esthetician. Currently, I am the Lead Esthetician and spa manager for Amici Medspa. I specialize in treating a wide variety of skin conditions, from acne to aging. I am known for skin treatments that truly heal the skin but also allow for relaxation. I love being able to heal someone’s skin and their soul. I also specialize in makeup. I was the one doing all my friend’s makeup for every school dance, graduation, etc, and I get to continue doing that today. I have done makeup for Halloween parties, weddings including my little sisters, school dances and more. The best part is handing someone the mirror at the end and seeing their face light up. They feel beautiful and are filled with confidence.
I am most proud that I have been able to live out my dream. Every day I am able to help people feel more confident in their skin. I have been able to merge the gap I hated so bad as a teen when I struggled with my skin. I get to be a skin healer while being understanding and loving to people. Currently, I am seeing clients at the spa and doing virtual consultations online to help people with skin concerns all over the country. I also made educational skin content on Instagram and tik tok.
