Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Hawley.
Hi Matthew, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My parents bought a lumber yard when I was 5 years old introducing me to construction. I worked at the family lumberyard growing up by 8 years old I could operate the forklift loading and unloading trucks.
At age 19, they sold the lumber yard I worked construction until winter when everyone got laid off and then joined the Army. After getting out of the Army, I took a job driving a truck for a living. In 1999, my first marriage fell apart, I moved back to my home town I continued to drive evenings and worked remodeling with my parents during the daytime and on the weekends.
In 2001, I got remarried and continue to drive and remodel. In 2010, when we sold one of our homes I went to the home inspection the inspection company offered me a job that I turned down a couple of months later I called them to take them up on the job offer after several attempts and they did not answer there phone. I put myself through school and started my own company. Work was slow at the beginning but I refused to give up.
Eventually, I went from doing 10 inspections a year to doing 700 inspections a year. In 2018, while at an inspector conference, I joined a professional mentoring organization. In February of 2019, as prepared for their big yearly conference my mentor/coach asked me what was keeping me from becoming the best that I could be that day I excepted the fact that I am an alcoholic and got sober.
Since then, my company has grown to where it does over 1000 inspections every year, I took training on how to be a professional speaker During my speaker training, I realized that I wanted to tell people my story of being an alcoholic, depressed, suicide, and try to get to help at least one person realize that there is helping out there. I started drinking in junior high and have tried targeting the schools but because of covid that has failed.
I have spoken on a stage in Vegas at the Bellagio and told my story there I was asked to tell part of my story in a book that went on to be the best-selling book on Amazon.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been full of ups and downs learning how to market me, getting sober, Covid.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a veteran-owned/family run and operated business, we do home inspections in MO & IL, we lead the industry with free termite inspections, free repair follow-up inspections, free thermal imaging, over $100,000.00 worth of free warranties with every inspection, unlike everyone else we warranty our sewer scopes and radon testing.
Most home inspection companies are a one-man show where we have multiple inspectors allowing us to get to the clients faster. All of our inspectors are certified professional inspectors, certified inspection experts, and we have more certified master inspectors than any other company in the area.
We require our inspectors to do a minimum of 50 hours of continuing education every year whereas most companies require around 20 hours.
What were you like growing up?
I have always been an introvert that preferred to spend his time fishing, camping, walking around in the woods, hunting, spending time with my family. As an adult I still enjoy my time with nature fishing, kayaking, walking through the woods, hunting, and spending time with my family.
