Daily Inspiration: Meet Nolo Black

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nolo Black.

Hi Nolo, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a rough condition, born in the projects, and grew up poor. I had no positive male influences, and my mama was a single mother trying to stay afloat. I found a CD of 2pac’s Greatest Hits when I was 9 or 10, and from then on, I did nothing but listen to hip-hop and 2pacs influence molded my sound and aspirations. By the time I became a teenager I became heavily involved in rapping and producing but became involved in the streets as well which resulted in almost ending my life on 2 occasions. The last time I faced death the Doctor’s weren’t sure if I’d wake up, and if I did that I would never walk, or talk the same again. Well, I did wake up, and I regained my walking ability and speech back to 100 percent…It also changed me as a man and made me realize the street influence has a toxic effect on the youth. Music has power, and I try to utilize my voice to inspire and motivate people. I want encourage people to live life with no limitations and strive for better. Hip Hop saved my life and gave me purpose and my plan now is to return the favor to those ears that I reach.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road; I’ve had many hurdles to overcome. From surviving near-death to becoming a father I struggled a lot mentally and physically. But all these obstacles made me into the artist I am now, and I wouldn’t change a thing. There’s no ups without downs.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a rapper, and producer. I specialize in hip hop, and I’m known for the strength in my flow. I’m most proud of the accomplishments I’ve made and continue to make with music. What sets me apart is my mind state and the power of emotion in my voice.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was obsessed with music, art, and martial arts. They were always my escape. I drew constantly as a kid and I read comic books and novels… As I grew my skill for drawing translated to tattooing, and I’ve been a tattoo artist on the side for the last 5 years. Although it’s not my main love…music has my heart. In my personal life, I love to make people laugh and laughter has always been a way I connect with people outside of music.
