Conversations with Matt F. Basler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt F. Basler.

Hi Matt, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I guess I’d say, I started in 1984 when I was born.

The next 10 years probably aren’t that important. But then at 11 years, oh boy, that’s where things take a turn. My older brother had been playing guitar, and all guitar players need bass players. Bass players are the younger brothers of the music world, and I am the younger brother of my older brother.

I think most of my creative skills branch off from this point. Writing songs, making videos, animation, screen printing, podcasting… it can all be traced back to this single point where I said “Uh, I guess,” when my parents asked me if I want to play bass guitar.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One time I got a band together and we played ‘Smooth by Santana ft. Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty; twenty-two times in a row (twenty and two encores). That wasn’t really a struggle at all because we only had to learn and practice one song.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I guess if there was one thing I’ve done that has been seen by the most people, it would be a Tik Tok video where I am missing a nipple. I squeeze the nipple I DO have, and out pops another nipple. Then I slap that thing on to replace the missing nipple.

That video has over 15 million views. I suppose that’s my legacy. I am very proud of all of my nipple manipulation videos. They started as a way to practice motion tracking. I didn’t want to bother with using stickers or drawing tracking points on myself, so I just used what was naturally on my body and trackable in After Effects.

I think what sets me apart is that most people don’t really make any videos where their nipples fall off or change colors or get really big. I am alone in this pursuit.

How do you define success?
Money.
