Exploring Life & Business with Marissa Savino of MJs Hip Hop Connex

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa “MJ” Savino.

Hi Marissa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The role of Publicist fell into my lap.

While employed as a Social Worker for 15 years, I still managed to find time to write for blogs and magazines as well as help artists with music promotion. During that time the number of blogs and magazines I wrote far grew, and the number of artists I was assisting grew, as well as conducting interviews with classic Hip-Hop pioneers.

After I hung up the hat of Social Worker, I took a leap of faith to continue my role in the music and entertainment industry. As a result of my building and networking on a daily basis, my Rolodex became rather impressive, and I began working more alongside Hip Hop pioneers/legends.

Both my name and business MJs Hip Hop Connex started making traction not only nationally but internationally as well. Today, it is a well-respected brand and I have the honor to work with up-and-coming artists, established artists, and major artists.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing in life is smooth. The first year, I was doubting myself and my abilities. I questioned if MJ’s Hip-Hop Connex could thrive and pay bills at the same time. I questioned if I would be able to provide artists with the most effective PR services.

I’m thankful for my best friend who always encouraged me to hang in there and I’m also forever grateful to Rampage for always believing in me and pushing me towards greatness.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
MJs Hip-Hop Connex is a one-stop for all PR needs for individuals in the music or entertainment industry. We specialize in artist development, social media management, radio, and media exposure as well as the very basics such as bio’s, EPK’s, press releases, E-blasts, one-sheets, etc.

My business stands out from other agencies as I provide varied tiers to accommodate all budgets, I work with all individuals regardless of where they are at in their career, and if something is out of my range I refer individuals to business partners.

Being able to be a part of an individual’s growth and progression in their career is extremely rewarding, you can’t put a price tag on that. Watching an artist go from open mics to headling for mainstream artists, to touring the world!

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Without a doubt to the network every single day. Also, as a female in a male-dominated industry, I must remember to always wear my firm hat and tight boots. Social Work and the music and entertainment industry go hand in hand in many ways.
