Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Mcguire.
Hi Amanda, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I remember like it was yesterday, being 4/5 years old, living in a shotgun apartment in the city with my single mom and older sister Melissa who was 8 at the time. My sister and I were sitting in the floor in our bedroom when she taught me how to braid hair for the first time on one of our baby dolls. From that point on, I was obsessed with styling my Barbie’s hair and eventually on to my friends and family.
I’ve always been a visual learner, so school never came easy for me. While in high school I discovered I could attend a tech school, continue my education in a way I was able to understand, and do something I already loved. This was an easy transition for me. I didn’t have to struggle academically anymore. I graduated tech school in 2007. Immediately after graduating I started working at a salon.
I endured the hardest years of my life while at that salon. Just shy of my 21st birthday, my boyfriend and I found out I was pregnant. The vision I thought our family would look like was far from my reality. The happy home I thought we would have as a new family turned to domestic violence and me sometimes fighting for my life. I fought. I fought like hell through it all, for myself and my son. My son is what kept me going. At this point I was in survival mode and my job was a way for me to escape from reality. Through the grace of God, my drive and the fire inside me, I outgrew that relationship and my time at that salon. With that behind me, I was ready for bigger and better opportunities. That’s when I made the move to Sola Salon Studios.
Life was on the up. I found love, got married, and had my daughter. I started putting myself back together again. Piece by piece. I surrounded myself around people that helped me grow. One person that had a significant impact on my life was my sister-in-law, Denye. She taught me about mind, body and soul connection. But most importantly, not letting other people’s opinions effect my state of mind. This was a game changer for me. Being a habitual people pleaser, this simple mindset shift felt like a weight lifted off my shoulders. I started believing in myself. I started opening my mind to possibilities. I started wanting more for myself. My fixed mindset started evolving into a growth mindset.
I again outgrew my time in this space. I gave myself one year to find a way to generate more income by working smarter, not harder. I genuinely believe in ask, believe, receive. Everything from there just fell into place. I found a space perfect for my vision. Through lots of hard work, perseverance, and tenacity, I made my vision a reality. None of this would have been possible without my husband. He completely renovated the space and built my dream salon. Now I not only get to do what I love as a stylist, but I get to be a living example for others to see their potential and give them inspiration. That makes my story and struggles worth it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road along this journey. While at the first salon, I had to work two additional jobs to make ends meet. I remember the long days that turned into nights, day after day. I didn’t know what life had in store for me but giving up was never an option. Ever.
