Inspiring Conversations with Rachel Speis of Fair Lady Floral Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Speis.

Hi Rachel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My first job was in a grocery store floral department in 2017. I had no skills, no experience, and honestly, no interest in flowers. But I fell in love with it. It was something that just clicked for me, and I knew I had found my “thing.” I worked there for only a year before moving on, but I kept up with floral designing with arrangements for holidays and bouquets for brides. In 2019, I decided to get a certification in floral design, which I completed within a year. In 2021, I decided to register my business and start building it officially.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My business is still very much in its infancy. There have been many bumps in the road, and it won’t ever be smooth! I’m very fortunate to have a supportive and helpful family that often gives up their weekends to help me with anything I need! Mistakes are made, but I strive to learn from them and grow as a designer and business owner.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love to learn how to make things, and I’m always trying something new. My favorite thing to make is hand-tied bouquets, so I specialize in weddings. But I’ve done everything from funeral pieces to just-because arrangements to prom corsages. I was trained to create more traditional floral pieces, but as I’ve grown as a designer, I’ve found I prefer a mixture of wild and elegant florals. My business promotes sustainability by cutting back on floral foam, composting, and drying flowers to create long-lasting pieces.

Can you talk to us about happiness and what makes you happy?
Creating with flowers is one of my favorite thing in the world, and it always brings me joy. I also love to spend time with my family and friends — hiking, watching movies, playing games, or just going on a drive and jamming to our favorite tunes.
