Hidden Gems: Meet Nya “Cuban” Jordan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nya “Cuban” Jordan.

Hi Nya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Since I’ve been a little girl, I have always known the life I was destined to have. Ambition, aspiration, and motivation have always played big parts in the person I am today and the person I’m still becoming (because I am evolving every day). Growing up, at a young age, I knew very early how talented I was.

Being self-taught in most crafts and having naturally born capabilities, I knew I would be a force to be reckoned with one day. Some may say it isn’t healthy but, money has always been at the top of the things needed for me to be happy in life (with self-love, honor, and gratitude coming before it). I started young with dreams of becoming rich and famous while always being true to myself no matter what.

So naturally, I’m a born hustler. I started braiding hair at the age of twelve just to see if I could do it out of boredom and I could! I had my first real paying customer at the age of fourteen and it has been up ever since! I had my first real paying job just four days after my sixteenth birth, so I always stayed with a way to make my own.

But soon I would begin to realize I hated the thought of anyone having “power” over me in any aspect of my life, especially when it came down to the hard-earned money I make. So here I am now. An honorable, self-loving, big money-making, gracious, and graceful woman and this is the beginning of me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I once read a quote that said “Everything comes with a price. You can never gain something if you don’t sacrifice something of equal value”, and that quote spoke to the deepest and darkest parts of my soul. In my life, I have come to befriend obstacles, struggles, and challenges, which hindered but never stopped me.

I knew that I had to give up the strongest parts of me in order to reveal the best parts of me. Allowing me to see and live to my full potential. I can remember as early as the age of seven, being molested and S.A., taking a huge toll on me mentally and emotionally throughout my preteens, causing me to lose faith in my abilities and wanting to step back from the world, into a hole and never come out again.

This made me change my perspective of the world very soon in life, and as an effect, also wanted to throw all my dreams out the window. I soon realized that if I was to give up on myself I would be doing myself the biggest disservice of my life! I loved myself way too much to ever let that happen. Later on in life, I would go on to have my son at the very young age of sixteen.

While still learning myself, healing from past trauma, working a job, being a student-athlete, graduating high school, going straight into college, moving into my own space at the age of eighteen in a completely different state, and to where I am now. Challenges on top of challenges, but somehow I did it. I did it all. Some of the hardest things life could throw at one person at one time ultimately turned into the biggest blessing I could ever ask for.

Having the trouble I had to get help with finding a babysitter to be able to make money at different jobs, made me vow to myself “never again” pushing the biggest impact on me into making my own business once and for all. I strive and made it such a priority to make a name for myself and to be an inspiration to girls who said they look up to me and be the mother my son could be proud to have.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Twisted by Cuban?
I specialize in braids. Mainly Senegalese twist, since not a lot of people, do them anymore. I’m very highly skilled in my craft. One of the top Senegalese twist braiders in the city of St. Louis.

I provide fast and efficient services and I promise all my clients I would never send them out the door with anything I’m not proud of. I also do knotless braids, feedins, and soon wigs and expand my brand to micro-blading and lip tenting later on in the year.

Which I am super excited about! I think what sets me apart from most styles is that I love what I do and my professionalism and what pushes me while doing hair is that I am always excited about the outcome of my work, and how happy my client is going to leave feeling about themselves in the end.
