Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Mund.
Hi Michael, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I have always drawn this since childhood without knowing I would someday become an artist. As a teenager, after going to different schools, artistic studies finally caught my attention; it was what I loved. After my studies, I did different jobs to become an educator for adults with intellectual disabilities. By chance, I had exposure opportunities during this period of my life. First in my region, then over the years, my art has crossed borders. So I exhibited in Belgium, France, Washington DC, Toronto, Osaka, Bratislava, etc. And here soon, I will exhibit in Salt Lake City in a collective exhibition. This will be an “URBAN POP” exhibition curated by Todd Marshall at the Bountiful Davis Art Center from July 29 to September 10. Well, I think you have to trust life. What must happen? I have had the chance to exhibit my art for over sixteen years now. Going to meet people and sharing is, I think, the best thing 🙂
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a smooth road?
For me, it hasn’t always been easy. My dad had concerns about an artistic career. He disagreed with that when I was a teenager. I think that’s what gave me the strength to prove him wrong. What’s great is that he currently supports me artistically! Otherwise, there is no secret, the work is important! Always believe in yourself, even if some will try to dissuade you. The road is not always smooth, but that’s what life teaches. We learn from our mistakes and start over without giving up.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I mainly paint on canvas and draw. My favorite technique is acrylic, but I also work in oil, watercolor, and spray paint. I like to work on popular, topical themes and provoke viewers’ thoughts. I like to give meaning to my work. I think I’m known for my paintings of burgers where I “denounce” big junk food groups’ influence on children by giving them gifts when they eat in their restaurants. Even if I denounce junk food, I like to paint these burgers anyway because they are very POP. What I’m most proud of is that currently, I mix my daughters’ drawings with my paintings. It’s my way of honoring them. I don’t know what distinguishes me from others, but in any case, I remain humble and authentic.
How would we have described you growing up if we knew you were growing up?
I think I’ve always been a calm person but with a slightly crazy side, apart. I’ve always been curious and I think that’s what influences my artistic work.
