Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Haymart.
Hi Heather, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Being artistic was passed down from generations before me and continues through my now adult children. This imaginative mind carried me through grade school as I drew a copy of every birthday card that came into the house. It accompanied me in high school while I learned how to use pen and ink, watercolor, and even make a baseball bat on a lathe in shop class. Art studio courses in college were a constant source of nourishment. After finishing college with two degrees; BFA and BSed, I quickly transitioned from art teacher to mural painter and finally to what I have always been called to do; create paintings to share with the world.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being an artist is anything but a smooth road, but I will always say it is worth the bumps and curves. In my experience, my self-worth can, unfortunately, be tied up in my successes and failures. Not only do I need financial security, but I can also sometimes fall into this false notion of associating a lack of income with not being a good enough artist. I have had to find a way to balance being a business/marketing person with being an artistic/maker person so that I can remain authentic while still doing my part to help pay bills.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create colorful abstract texture paintings that resemble something familiar yet not immediately recognizable. One sees a field of flowers, while another sees a beautiful sunrise. I love creating a mystery that encourages viewers to feel like they may hold the key. It is hard to choose what I am most proud of. I am fortunate to have many people who have my art in their homes ranging from very small to huge pieces. Creating art that people connect with enough to make it a part of their home is incredibly rewarding. I am also proud to have commissioned paintings hanging at the new SLU Hospital, thanks to PS Art Consulting, the Shaw Plaza Building, thanks to Grafica Fine Art and Erickson Living, thanks to Spellman-Brady.
