Life & Work with Melody Land of O’fallon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody Land.

Hi Melody, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I have enjoyed taking photos since I first had my first phone in elementary school. I even remember trying to make them look professional by capturing them at certain angles. It started with flowers, trees, pretty sunsets, etc. Then, I took a few photography classes in high school, and I used a real camera for the first time, and I fell in love! It was initially challenging to learn all the settings, but I got the hang of it quickly. I started taking the camera home for projects in class and just for fun. I would have photo shoots with my family and boyfriend to practice more. I have always been the girl to shove a camera in someone’s face, lol, or “Say Cheese!” I established a passion for photography at a young age, but pursuing my dream as a photographer, I just started recently. I have grown a lot over the years, and I am beyond excited about this opportunity and seeing where the future takes me!

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Anything you put your mind to will be challenging, but if you believe in yourself, anything is possible. I always thought, “There is no way I could make money from photography. I am not good enough.” Never say never! Some of the obstacles I have encountered are self-doubt and time. Setting aside time for photoshoots and such and editing them afterward is hard. I had to push photography to the back burner to save money for the needed equipment.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have always been creative and an artist in some way. When I was little, I got caught coloring on the walls of our house with crayons, and my parents were livid. I loved coloring in coloring books; I would spend so much time and effort on any crafts or projects in school. I won many art shows, and in high school, some of my photography pictures were posted in the hallway for everyone to see. Whenever someone needed something written down or drawn, they would say, “Melody do it! She’s the best at that kinda stuff.” I would get thrown with the most bizarre task, lol. I love having things thrown my way and learning new things. It can be slightly overwhelming, but worth it!

What makes you happy?
I am spending time with my family and my boyfriend and his family. They are my biggest supporters and have driven me my whole life. My boyfriend Lucah is always behind me every step of the way, pushing me to strive harder and harder. I have a huge sense of humor, and laughter is the best medicine. I am one to love a good laugh. I love having fun and just smiling with the people I love. They bring me so much joy it’s unreal.
