Today, we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Hickman . Sarah was introduced to us by the brilliant and talented Gina Sachs.
Hi Sarah, we’re so thrilled to have you sharing your story with us today. Maybe we can kick things off by having you introduce yourself to our readers? We’d love to have you go into your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve loved drawing since I was a kid! I remember organizing my crayons and drawing scenes from my Disney storybooks countless times. After I had my first baby, I spent a lot of time on YouTube during late night feedings. I stumbled upon some bullet journal videos and I was hooked! I got myself a journal and started creating. I spent a lot of time making my journal look just how I wanted. This turned into a passion for hand lettering and reignited my enjoyment of doodling. My husband encouraged me to share my work, so I started an Instagram account dedicated to my art. The more I practiced, the more my skills improved and I decided to start teaching myself digital lettering and art. This has become my favorite way to create! I try to have a little bit of time each day to make some art. It’s not easy sneaking the time in, as a stay at home mom to two little boys, but it makes me happy and I prioritize time for things I enjoy.
Please talk to us about your creative work and career. What should we know?
My favorite things to create are hand lettering pieces and fun/playful art. I’m a huge fan of children’s book illustrations, and I would say most of my drawings have a kid lit look to them. My goal for my art is to make people smile, bring some cheer, and spread kindness and encouragement. You can find my work on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/
So, as we mentioned to our audience earlier, you were introduced to us by Gina Sachs and tinyacts.co and we really admire them and what they’ve built. For folks who might not be as familiar, can you tell them a bit about your experience with tinyacts.co.
Gina reached out to me via Instagram to ask about my willingness to illustrate her children’s book. We chatted a bit, and she sent me the book. I loved it!! This story is so sweet and uplifting! I was thrilled to be able to be a part of it! Gina had a pretty clear vision of how she wanted the illustrations to look, and that was really nice for me. She described how she saw the scene, and I brought it to life. Gina was a delight to work with. She had her own ideas, but was also open to my interpretation and vision. Her characters are sure to capture the hearts of the children and adults who read this book!
