Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Reams.
Hi Lindsay, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been a graphic designer for over 10 years – doing everything from packaging to catalog design. About 4 years ago, I was doing freelance contract work for a small marketing company and noticed that most small businesses were operating with just a logo and had no real sense of how to show up consistently in their marketing. I started my business in August of 2020 and focused on helping businesses understand why they do what they do and how they will stand out from their competitors. My clients communicate their vision, and together we lay the groundwork for them to grow toward those goals. Since starting Lindsay Reams Design, I’ve been able to help countless small businesses have the confidence to show up consistently online and in person. They understand how to use their design assets and how their brand will connect with their ideal audience.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business during Covid wasn’t for the faint of heart! I spent many hours on social media content that never got anywhere, and it felt isolating to be doing this by myself. It took until 2023 for me to step out of my bubble and start physically going to networking groups and meeting other business owners, and it has been such a game-changer for me. Hearing their stories, learning from their struggles, and finding ways to connect my clients with people who can help them has been rewarding.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I try to live by this quote in my brand and web designs: “A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” Antoine de Saint-Exupery
With brand design vs. graphic design, I must consider all the different applications where their logo suite could appear. It has to be scalable, legible, memorable, and clean. I also deliver multiple logo variations, sub-marks, and icons so my clients can communicate more than just their brand name. I always show my clients some of the possibilities of how their brand could appear in the world, but it’s always gratifying to see them using their brand in ways I never even thought of.
My website designs are more of an experience than what’s typically expected from an average website. I love adding custom touches like movement, textures, and illustrations that keep the user engaged in the site. They are all designed with the user journey in mind so that we can get the user from the homepage to the inquiry form and answer all their questions along the way.
Are any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Every business owner (and human) should read Atomic Habits. While reading that book, I realized that I am a very habitual person and was encouraged to add a few more tiny habit changes that will help me get closer to my goals. As a designer, I frequently listened to Better: The Brand Designer Podcast when starting my business. They helped me with the business side of invoicing, automation, challenging clients, etc. Highly recommend!
