Conversations with Suzanne Cunningham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanne Cunningham.

Suzanne Cunningham

Hi Suzanne, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My love of calligraphy began as a child. My mom had the 19th edition of the Speedball Textbook, and I would copy the letters from it. In 1994, I took samples of my work to various stationery stores and began addressing envelopes for brides. Instagram changed the game tremendously and allowed more people to see my work. Before that, it was strictly word of mouth. Now, I enjoy teaching calligraphy to others as well as doing it myself.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Of course, no journey is ever completely smooth, but I’ve been fortunate not to have had many problems. Probably the most annoying thing I have to deal with is people not getting their guest list to me on time.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work day varies. It might include a day of nothing but addressing envelopes; it might be a commission piece I’m working on, writing an invitation suite for a bride, writing handouts from which I teach, or teaching an online workshop. I’m probably the most known for writing flourished Copperplate script and teaching online. I’m most proud of being a 25th edition Speedball Textbook co-editor.

How do you think about luck?
No luck. Hard work, many hours of practice, lots of patience, and the good Lord putting people in my path who need to be there.
