Today we’d like to introduce you to LaKisha Turner.
Hi LaKisha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Everybody has a “sad” story, but I can’t say mine is too bad. Let’s talk about a girl born and raised in St. Louis with all the resources to be great but needs direction on properly using them. My childhood was the best my mother could make it be for her children. I am the oldest & only girl of three. I was raised by a single mother with little to no help from our fathers, but one thing I never saw was my mother giving up. I saw her work multiple jobs, some overnight, with little to no sleep to make ends meet. I was in the kitchen frying chicken and helping my mother raise my brothers as early as I can remember! I graduated from McCluer North H.S. and attended Langston University in Oklahoma for 2 years.
Unfortunately, I never attained my degree; instead, I was blessed with the task of being a mom. I had my son in 2011 and started my journey as a working-class single woman. At some point, I knew working for someone else wasn’t for me. Asking to be off, taking a vacation, getting penalized for being sick, or having a sick child didn’t work for me any longer! I started my Entrepreneur journey back in 2018 with my travel business (LMB Travels). Eventually, I added the tax industry to my hustle (Turner Tax Services), and the custom business (Kisha’s Kreations) birthed itself during the pandemic! Although I kept a part-time job now and then since 2018, I can proudly say I have been rocking and rolling, fully self-employed since 2022.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has most definitely been a challenging road. Entrepreneurship is hard. It’s literally you investing and taking a chance on yourself. It takes faith and patience, and I mean patience! I switched travel companies twice before I found the right fit for my business. I was being robbed by a tax company I initially started with for my first 2 years in the industry. I am still on and off with the custom business; there are ups and downs. I have months where business is booming, and I still need to make a dime somewhere.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Turner Tax Services was started in 2018. I had always done my taxes myself, so I was sold when I found out I could start a business and make over 6 figures. I came into the industry as a small business owner, so I decided to specialize in that! I wanted to help others like myself who had recently started a small business get all the tax breaks and write-offs they were entitled to. I will always remember the first year trying to file my business taxes with one of the big-name companies. I was utterly shocked at the difference in numbers and what I was being charged. We also specialize in business formations & bookkeeping. Not only do we want to ensure your financial books are accurate, but we want to ensure your business is legal and registered! What sets me apart from others is my humility. You can call me the Little Helper! I am available and willing to help anybody in any way I can!

What’s that saying, “Scared money, don’t make no money!” I am a big risk taker; I open the door when opportunity knocks. Yes, I’ll pay for that class, and yes, I am going to that conference; I am paying for and soaking up as much as possible to ensure my business is thriving. Sometimes, the risk is not worth the reward, but you only know once you take that chance! I don’t let opportunities pass me by because I never know what rooms they may land me in and with whom. I have been in millionaires’ homes, traveled worldwide, and met and compiled with some fantastic people!
