Today we’d like to introduce you to Miranda Myles Jackson.
Hi Miranda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I’ve owned my own design business for about 15 years now. Initially, I started freelancing my graphic design skills out of frustration with the lack of opportunities in the area. I started at home with second-rate software on my laptop. While I still work remotely, things do look a little differently now. What was a small decision at the time has become the basis for my entire career. I still work with clients on B2B design projects; I’ve become a Professor of Graphic Design (most recently at a top HBCU in New Orleans), published my first book, and had my terminal degree thesis published in ProQuest – the only digital repository available in the Library of Congress.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has yet to be smooth or anything I would have planned. Initially, I’d freelance for a bit, allowing me to boost my portfolio with local agencies. Instead, what happened was that prospective employers became clients. I’ll always remember. I went on an interview, and while they didn’t offer me the job I interviewed for – they contacted me to work on a design project for them. The agencies couldn’t understand why I’d wanted to work for them when I was already working for myself. An HR Associate told me that once. At the moment, this was baffling to me because it wasn’t my plan, though, with time, it became eye-opening. Why not just keep going? So I did.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I wear many hats. In wearing many hats, the skillset is the same; however, how they are applied changes with the objective. I’m Miranda Myles Jackson, a professional graphic designer helping businesses impress and engage their clientele and specializing in Identity Design, Marketing Materials, Digital Collateral, Web Interface Design, and Art Direction & Consulting. I am Professor Jackson, helping students grasp the theories, principles, and fundamentals needed to become visual and digital design professionals in their own right. As a professor, my specialties are Curriculum Design, Instructional Design, and my previously listed skills. Lastly, I’m also Miranda MJ, a designer and artist who loves carving out time to work on her artwork in both digital and traditional media. As an artist, I’m more of a multimedia artist. I love using typography, digital illustration, digital photography, and traditional art mediums to create self-expressive work. Ultimately, wearing many hats is what I’m known for. Each “hat” depends on the other for the most part, especially teaching.
What were you like growing up?
As a child, I loved everything about art and performance, and I still do. My sister and I would draw the characters from Disney books for fun. Looking back, I was curious and intelligent. I also had early signs of a love for entrepreneurship; I’d spearhead a lemonade stand or fruit sale just because.
