Meet Alexandria Toomey of First House

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandria Toomey

Hi Alexandria, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always been interested in the mystical and the unseen since childhood but astrology really captured me more than anything else. In 2017, I sought after an astrology mentorship in order to deepen my understanding of this ancient system. From there, I jumped into entrepreneurial endeavors and started a business offering astrology readings. That evolved into online business coaching for spiritual entrepreneurs.

There came a point where I felt lost and it felt out of integrity to continue to offer guidance so I took a hiatus. In that spaciousness, my friend, Andrea Richardson, and I bonded over being in similar places in our careers, which is what lead to creating our business, First House.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Certainly not smooth but I wouldn’t really say it’s been a struggle either. When I was feeling lost, it was during a time that astrologer’s call “The Saturn Return”. It’s when Saturn is back in the same area of the sky that it was at when you were born. It occurs when you’re around age 30. You don’t need to be an astrologer to know that this is a time in the life that can feel more challenging than most.

So during that time, I really struggled with a sense of life direction. I no longer trusted that I knew anything at all and I decided the best thing I could do for myself was to drop astrology, tarot, and the like, and to relax into life. Through that, I learned to hear and trust my inner wisdom. I learned the difference between anxiety, fear, intuition, and logic. I also learned how to tell the difference between what is true for me versus what I picked up from people around me and took on as my own.

Having gone through that is what has allowed me to navigate entrepreneurial challenges with self-trust. It actually makes these challenges feel less like a challenge and more like guideposts along the path.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about First House?
The mission of First House is to gather and share goods, knowledge, and practices to connect you to your whole being through the magic of seasonal living. First House provides a space for exploring different perspectives and tools to connect with self and others; and to show people how to identify and move with the cycles of nature.

First House is a retail boutique offering books, crystals, candles, loose-leaf teas, card decks, journals, and more. Our collection of books focuses on personal growth, magical practices, and nonfiction. Personal growth means we’re engaging in practices big and small to create a more liberated and equitable world. We curate our book collections with memoirs and essays on topics like equity, queerness, anti-fat bias, sex, death, disability, and more.

Additionally, I am an astrologer and Human Design coach who provides chart readings. The purpose of my work is to support and guide people towards living the most aligned and fulfilling life meant for them based on their unique design.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I don’t have favorites but one that comes to mind and feels relevant is when my grandma would take me to my favorite shop. One day on the radio, I heard an ad for a store near where she lived called “New Ages Other Worlds” and it sounded like a dream come true to my eight-year-old ears. I don’t know if she believed in the mystical but she always allowed me to explore it safely, so we would go to that store regularly when I stayed with her.

I remember the awe I felt as I watched adults buying spell books and crystal balls, just like I had always wished were possible. I thought, “If adults are interested in this kind of thing then that must mean magic is real!”.

It wasn’t until a couple of days ago that I realized I was building my own version of that store I loved so much.
