Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamey Stegmaier
Jamey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve loved playing and designing tabletop games as a hobby for most of my life, and when Kickstarter started to rise in popularity in 2011, I decided to try my hand at designing a game specifically for the purpose of crowdfunding it. After a successful campaign for that game, Viticulture, in 2012, I continued to make more games, explore other markets, and eventually grow into a small team. At this point we have over a dozen games published in 30+ languages, sold to consumers and retailers worldwide.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would be surprised if any business had a perfectly smooth road. I’ve made plenty of mistakes over nearly 12 years at Stonemaier Games, and I share all of them on our company blog at stonemaiergames.com, ranging from budgeting errors to subpar proofreading to forecasting errors.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
A small part of my job remains in tabletop game design (creating a game from scratch and prototyping, playtesting, and iterating) and game development (helping a good game become a great game). At Stonemaier Games, we’re best known for Wingspan–a strategy game about collecting birds–along with Scythe, Viticulture, and Red Rising, among others. We’re known for high-quality components and evocative art, along with our ongoing attempt to uplift other creators (not just our own products) through our blog, YouTube channel, and social media.
What are your plans for the future?
Our goal is always to try to bring joy to tabletops worldwide, so that’s always our focus–yesterday, today, and tomorrow. We try to accomplish this by making our games as accessible as possible (though they can be daunting for those who haven’t played modern strategy games).
