Check Out Destinee Henderson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Destinee Henderson.

Hello, and thank you for allowing me to share my story. It inspires me when I think of my journey!
The odds were against me as a child. Born to a mother with an addiction, placed me and my sibling to lived with a few relatives until a couple adopted me and my sister. Becoming a rebellious teen as I got older, I went from juvenile to a group home for children.

So many bad things were happening to me and I was always fighting for my life because of my environment. The final stop before the transition was spending a year in a children’s psychiatric hospital. At the end of that journey, I realized that it wasn’t anything wrong with me and I was really destined to be great. Once released from that hospital. I immediately enrolled in a beauty college.

I was 16 years old at the time. Because of my life’s events. I dropped out of school in 9th grade. I completed my GED with amazing scores and on to college I went. While in beauty college, I worked two jobs and lived in the Shelter downtown St Louis. I completed a program through the St Vincent’s Center and they helped me move into my first apartment. Shortly after, I was graduating from college at 18 years old.

I was determined to beat all of the odds against me. I walked into the first salon after receiving my license and told the manager I could cut hair. I really didn’t know if i could. She hired me sorely because of my personality. I had never picked up a pair of clippers in my life before then!

But once I did, I realized that I was gifted with a special talent. And hair became my life up until today. By the time I was 21 years old, I moved to Albany New York, and excepted a job offer as an Area Supervisor at a hair company.

That’s when I started feeling confident being on my own and feeling free. I was turning my life completely around. After fulfilling that obligation and getting the experience, I moved back to St Louis and because my position wasn’t to open at the company I was at, I stepped down as a stylist at another corporation and started over. Three months after being back in St. Louis, I became the manager.

Almost two years after at the age of 23, the organization I worked for flew me to Denver to train and receive my American Crew Instructors Certification. I’ve completed both methods one and two of the certification. After I trained for the organization for 2 years and managed the salons. The next thing I did was apply for and accept a position as an Education Services Specialist working for the corporate office.

I’ve trained stylists on how to cut hair across the world, I’ve trained managers on how to operate their salons and I’ve trained Franchisees on how to build their business. Over the years, I have performed in the company’s hair shows, helped to rewrite their training programs, and collaborated with every department.

In the year 2020, I accepted a job as a Director of Operations covering the South and Central Regions. Not intentionally, but it really fell in my hands three days before Covid shut down the corporation I was at.

I worked for their competitor for 8 months during Covid and that’s when I learned the entire process of Franchising a business. Once the company I previously worked for opened back up, I decided to go back because I found more joy in training and inspiring stylist that I connected in every class. I’ve always felt that that I was giving back to others and it was fulfilling every day.

I have received training from Paul Mitchell, Sexy HAIR, TIGI, American Crew, Whal, Andis and many more vendors. And I’ve learned all that I needed to get me to where I am today. At the beginning of June 2022, I started manifesting my heart’s desires, and working for myself has always been the ultimate dream. I decided to resign from teaching and now I have fun behind the chair, and I do it for myself.

I had to strengthen my faith and believe that I would be okay being uncomfortable “at first”. I can’t call it work because I love the personal connections that I make and I love making people look and feel great. I’m having fun behind the chair at Novio’s Grooming Spa, located in Overland, Mo. And I’m so glad that decided to bet on myself. I spent so many years pouring myself into others, that I wake grateful to be pouring back into myself.

I’m doing what I love with great knowledge and skills that I’ve never even dreamed of as a child. So today I go by Visionary stylist because whatever I visualize, I have a gift to create it. For the rest of my life, I’m going to be building my own brand and having fun behind the chair.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Since working for myself it has been a smooth road because I have faith that people are going to come and allow me to service them because I love what I do! And who doesn’t want a stylist that loves to make them look beautiful?

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in ALL THINGS HAIR!

I can create ANY haircut, any color, any style, and any picture shown. I love locs, braids, and transformations.

I’m great at pedicures, manicures, waxing, and lashes. I am most proud, that I’m living my dream now.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me, is being able to sit my suitcases down and wake up with my children every day.

I love the flexibility in my life. I love to be able to turn on the slow cooker before I head to the salon. I enjoy my freedom to choose how my day goes.
