Check Out Gabrielle Hannah’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabrielle Hannah.

Hi Gabrielle, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic, I graduated DePaul University in June 2020. As many of us know, finding a job right after college is difficult, let alone finding one in a pandemic. So, I tapped into my entrepreneurial skills and decided to begin my own business endeavor, DeSIGN Me Up! a yard card company. Initially, what sparked the idea was searching for a graduation yard sign for myself and figured heck why not ask for a business investment as a graduation gift?! Now I am here, with a well-established clientele, several assistants and establishing myself within St. Louis’ entrepreneur social circle.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There were definitely quite a few bumps in the road. In the beginning, it was my mother and I installing and picking up signs together after a while, my grandmother became ill and I was working completely alone for three to four months; prepping, installing and picking up signs. It came to be so much that I thought about quitting and selling the business. But instead, I made it work best for me so I adjusted pricing, rental schedules, etc. so I could be able to take care of home also. I was nervous that customers would not respond well to the changes, but luckily I was wrong!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I consider myself a yard card professional. I have an extensive inventory in which I am able to accommodate almost any customer’s request for a theme or color scheme for their events. There’s a misconception that yard signs are only for birthdays or graduations, but that is far from the truth! You can honestly have a yard sign for absolutely ANY occasion. I love when I receive unusual requests because it makes my job a bit more spontaneous than what it already is.

Luckily for me, I got into this business before the rest of St. Louis jumped on the bandwagon, so I am fortunate to have experience and skills on my side to create elaborate yard sign displays that set me apart from other yard card companies in the area. Also, over the past year, I learned balloon art and how to create personalized yard signs that are now offered as additional services. I am proud of myself for making my mark in St. Louis and truly grateful for customer loyalty and referrals. What I do consists of delivering joy and smiles to each and every customer for their special occasion and that keeps me going and that’s what I am truly MOST proud of.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
What people do not know is that this job is not by any means easy and it can be a little dangerous at times. I have to deal with heatwaves and cold fronts, bugs and animals, hills and rocky roads. Sometimes the recipient doesn’t know we are coming and the customer wants it as a surprise. But, depending on the recipient, if they see someone in their yard with flashlights at night, it can go right or extremely left! Needless to say, I can go on and on about crazy encounters I’ve had installing signs.
