Check Out Jilleon Houston’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jilleon Houston.

Hi Jilleon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
The first few months of our marriage is how this story begins. My husband, daughter, and I decided to take a trip to Hobby Lobby to find a craft kit for our daughter. While we were walking the aisles, my husband ran across candle-making items and said “we should make candles”. So, we grabbed some things, went home, and started making granulated candles. We were pretty excited about what we created and showed pictures to our coworkers the next day. A few days later we took the actual candles to work and to our surprise, they wanted to buy them. After that, I decided to do some research about candle making and decided that soy wax was the way to go for us. Our candle-making journey began in 2016 and has been going strong ever since.

In 2019 we started attending farmers markets and craft shows. Some shows were a hit and others a colossal flop but that didn’t stop us. When the pandemic hit, we took the time to refocus and rebrand…soon May-Bel Candles was born. The name is a combination of our daughter’s names.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road hasn’t been smooth by any means. One of the biggest struggles is time. How can I devote time to my family, the business, and also my job? I’m a small business owner that works 40+ hours a week and has 2 young kids to tend to while trying to maintain inventory, create new items, market the brand and so much more.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We are most known for our candles and body butters, but honestly, we’re proud of all of our creations.

Our candles are made from 100% soy wax or a coconut/soy/palm wax blend, which are all good for you waxes. We make sure that our candles are safe for you and your family. The candle fragrances we choose are also safe and phthalate-free, and we use wooden wicks for the best fragrance throw and overall beautiful candle.

Our body butters are made of all-natural shea and mango butter, coconut oil, and other good for your skin ingredients (sorry, I can’t give out the entire recipe on here LOL). We use the best hydrating ingredients for your skin because certain times of the year can be really harsh on your skin.

Our newest creations include acrylic paint pouring. We started with pouring on canvases, but we decided to try pouring on other items. Recently, we started pouring on wooden letters and glass vases and it gives the items a different vibe.

I think what sets me apart from others is the fact that I continue to learn and grow. I continue to expand our brand to become more of a body product, fragrance and home decor feel, rather than just candles or just body products. I believe that our brand will become a one-stop online shop for all your home decor and body product needs.

What’s next?
I look forward to diving into my creative side more. I’m enjoying acrylic paint pouring and I want to do more with that. I want to take the time to learn more techniques, how to mix my own colors, and how to create great works of art. I find pouring paint rather relaxing as well, it’s really therapeutic.

As for any other big changes…just wait and see 🙂
