Check Out Kaleb and Amy Becar’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaleb and Amy Becar.

Hi Kaleb and Amy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We are Kaleb and Amy, a husband and wife team with a passion for holistic living and handcrafted toxin free toys that inspire curiosity and wonder through play. We love exploring the great outdoors, are always learning and enjoy developing character and practical life skills in our daughters.

As a couple, we enjoy working together and this business has shown us that we build each other up and support each other in our weaknesses and strengths. We believe that cultivating an environment for children to learn through play encourages independence, development and confidence. As parents, we understand that the young years in a child’s life go quickly and it can be a challenge to be present and enjoy the journey. Exploring and learning alongside your children is a humbling and exciting season in life. We hope our toys create space for your family to make memories and spend lots of quality time together.

Our toys are free of dyes, stains, paints, fragrances, BPA, phthalates, mineral oil, chlorine, and arsenic and lead. Wood is a much safer alternative to plastic. Everything is made from solid hardwood and sealed with organic coconut oil and a small amount of beeswax. There are no stains, all the natural color you see is real hardwood. We offer personalized toys with your child’s name, initial, or monogram on just about anything we make. Our business desires open-ended toys that are both modern and timeless. The toys we handmake are heirloom quality and will last through generations.

Natural living has become more important to us over the years as well as sharing our toys as an alternative option for a healthy lifestyle. Making the switch in thinking “less is more” as a family is a process but it is worth it to have meaningful things that grow into a cherished toy or heirloom that you wish to pass down. When you choose specific toys that foster imagination and breed learning, children not only learn from and play but their learning environment is beneficial to their health.

Everything we make from our shop is something that we feel confident giving to our own family. We are mindful in every step of our business and creative process. As a company, we are always looking to learn and improve with your family’s safety and the impact on our planet as a top priority. We try to keep our sources for items that we do not make local to Missouri and love supporting other small family owned businesses.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We learn new things every day in this entrepreneur lifestyle. The amount that we have changed and improved in the last 4 years of business is huge! There are so many great ways to be challenged to grow and develop character when you run your own business.

Balance has probably been the biggest lesson, which is still a work in progress. We work other jobs and parent two young children and have just begun homeschooling them as well. Finding the most efficient way to make our toys has been important as well as time management and taking the day one step at a time.

If you would have asked us 5 years ago where we would be now we would not have been able to dream this up. We would say that keeping everything in perspective, the last 4 years have been such a wild ride but many relatively easy transitions that have developed into an entirely different lifestyle, both personally and as a business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In 2016, we found ourselves desiring safe, healthy, beautiful and timeless wooden toys for our daughter instead of all the plastic and electronic based options offered. The mission became making toxin free, eco-friendly toys that benefit rather than harm the environment as well as encourage creative play without overwhelming or over stimulating the child. We love open ended toys that foster the imagination and give children more options to be creative.

We are self taught woodworkers who love to use this beautiful natural resource, to create modern learning and developmental toys. The warmth and beauty of the wood provides an earthy tone to any school room or nursery and is a safe way for babies and children to play. Our children even help us oil the toys with bare hands so you know that even a young baby can mouth and play with the wooden toys that we make. Wood is truly an amazing resource which is naturally colorful, anti-microbial, and durable. Hardwood is much less likely to splinter than a soft wood and we take care to hand sand all rough edges for your littles hands and mouths to explore.

Personalization is such a fun element that we can add to most every toy. Our best sellers are our wooden name puzzle, number puzzle, shape and alphabet puzzles and rainbow stacker but close behind are our wooden trucks and cars and new tool set. As we have enjoyed creating toys for the past 4 years, a passion for custom furniture has evolved and now we do children’s furniture as well as most anything you could need in your home or renovation project.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, we were both familiar with the outdoors, had our reliable friend circle and spent time challenging ourselves to think outside the box. Interestingly, we both loved things involving architecture and think that if encouraged we may have pursued that profession. I, (Amy), have an art degree and have enjoyed art from as early as 4th grade and Kaleb has always enjoyed working on things and finding out how to make the most out of every situation. We now get to use both of these God-given talents and skills to benefit our business and create some of the best toys available today.
