Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Ralston
Hi Nathan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I got started in photography by doing missions work. I was in Miami FL in 2007, and I saw a bush with pretty flowers on it. I had a 3-megapixel phone camera, and I was trying to get a picture of the flower. I thought to myself I think I’d enjoy photography, maybe I should buy a camera.
I bought an Olympus E-520. That was my first camera. Having that camera opened the door for me to travel to 7 different countries and take pictures for many different missionaries. Traveling allowed me to learn photography in a practical way.
I’ve learned so many things over 16 years of photography, I’m still constantly learning new things. Photography is not just a hobby or a business, it’s a passion.
Recently I have been doing gallery shows and some shows to sell my work. I’ve always found that selling work or selling myself as an artist is difficult. My passion has driven me to start a business. I’m looking forward to what the future has to bring.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been many challenges along the way, especially when trying to learn new methods in photography. There were not as many resources online back then as there are now. I learned a lot from magazines as well as trial and a lot of error.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a disabled veteran so my professional life or career has been a little bit different than most people. It has given me the opportunity to focus more on photography. I specialize in Infrared, storm photography, and microscopy. I have always been known for infrared, storm structure, and lightning pictures. I am most proud of the infrared pictures that I take. I believe the knowledge of knowing how to do so many different types of photography set me apart from others.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
If someone wanted to work or collaborate with me, they could contact me through my website or Instagram. I am in the process of creating a new website to be able to sell my work. I could be supported by print buying or gallery purchasing or at a local art show.
