Check Out Olivia Bracken’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Bracken.

Hi Olivia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My vision for Golden Door started in 2014 when I moved back to St. Louis from Taipei, Taiwan. I was (and still am) practicing Acupuncture with a passion for women’s health, women empowerment, social justice for all groups, and inclusion. In my practice, I found many women and underrepresented groups felt invalidated or unheard regarding their heath and wellness. I really wanted to create a space that valued and heard them. I also wanted to create a space that included more than one modality of integrative medicine because sometimes “It takes a village to heal a city.” Doctors can be great at prescribing medication but that is only one step to the healing process and many people need more resources to care for their health. The vision for Golden Door finally came into fruition in 2020 when we opened our doors last August.

Golden Door has a multitude of services such as; Acupuncture, Chiropractic, Massage, Somatic Experiencing, Counseling, Facials, Life Coaching and Tarot Card Reading. Although, we all offer something different to the healing process, we all share a strong vision of creating a healing space in a respectful, safe, and peaceful environment.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Opening our doors in August of 2020 was just crazy. Literally, EVERYTHING came with a problem because of the pandemic. Construction got delayed because parts couldn’t come in. As I was doing Acupuncture on the first floor, construction was happening on the second floor. On top of that, we had to all spread out to keep everyone socially distanced, but at the same time, we all shared one utility sink to clean our equipment. Navigating social distances between clients, keeping our clinic safe, and making enough to pay the bills made every day a challenge. No one knew how this pandemic would pan out, however, I knew people would need more health care in the future.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have been an Acupuncturist for almost ten years. I earned my Master’s in Oriental Medicine from Pacific College in Chicago, IL in 2012. I spent a year overseas in Taipei, Taiwan doing a clinical rotation with a Master Acupuncturist who specializes in skin diseases.

In 2019, I worked with a team of researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in the OB/GYN department on an Acupuncture research study. Unfortunately, it got delayed because of COVID.

I also work a few times a month at a local fertility clinic, STL Fertility, performing Acupuncture after IVF transfers.

I treat all types of conditions with Acupuncture but I specialize in fertility, hormone imbalances, skin issues, autoimmune conditions and digestive disorders. I am fully trained in not only Acupuncture (including Dry Needling and Cosmetic Acupuncture), but also Visceral Manipulation, Chinese Fire Cupping, and Chinese Herbal Medicine.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
As a child, I was diagnosed with ADHD. Of course, it was seen as such a negative diagnosis as a child but it has helped me dream big as an adult. My strengths lie in seeing the big picture, and initiating many of the tasks that I have to do to create the big picture. I just need help getting my thoughts and tasks organized. That is why I have a business coach, Meg Smidt, who keeps me focused and organized.

Before I opened Golden Door, I had two mentors John Schmieder and Mary Kunce. Both of them mentored me to be a better healer, leader, and just a better person. I can’t emphasize enough how much they changed me and inspired me. Listening, observing and challenging myself to grow is not only an important value for myself but for Golden Door as well.
