Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa McMullen.
Hi Teresa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a former Kindergarten teacher turned stay-at-home mom. I am married to my high school sweetheart, Kyle, and we have three kids. As much as I loved my dream job of being a stay-at-home mom, I needed a creative outlet. I really missed the creativity, planning and organizing from my past job as a teacher. I began Whimsical Dough in February of 2020 and it has taken off!
When my oldest was small, her and I would make play-dough together and create little “bakeries” and “candy shops” with our play dough creations. She absolutely loved it! I then went on to make her other kits and found that they really kept her interest and that she was learning so much! I began making them as gifts for friends and family and they encouraged me to start selling them.
After doing some research, I noticed that others were selling play dough kits, but many of the kits did not have what I wanted for my kids. They were overflowing with brightly colored doughs and enormous amounts of plastic trinkets, which given my teaching background, I knew would be overwhelming to them. From there, I decided to create a simple and organized yet still whimsical play dough kit that was high quality, earth-friendly, inspired by nature and beautiful for gifting.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest obstacles have been: social media, family balance and the business/organizational side of things. I am fairly new to social media and only started using it to promote Whimsical Dough. I have more of an introverted personality so it takes a lot of effort to create posts, stay active and also share myself and let customers get to know the face behind Whimsical.
Being a full-time mom and business owner is hard! I wear many hats and I love them all! This little business could take off if I let it. The demand is there. As time goes on, I am learning to keep my grow slow and savor these precious moments with my kiddos. I am so fortunate to be able to stay at home with them. This business will grow when the timing is right for my family. Right now, I include my littles in the dough making, my eight year old helps me package orders and I do the rest after they are in bed.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a maker of handcrafted play dough and play dough kits. My play dough and kits are minimalistic and are inspired by nature. They contain a lot of gemstones and natural loose parts. My packaging and kits are earth-friendly as I use natural ingredients, minimal plastic, eco-friendly packaging and high-quality loose parts in my kits. All doughs are scented using 100% pure essential oils and glittered using biodegradable glitter. The kits available generally follow the seasons. My dough is known for being super soft and having a very long lifespan.
What matters most to you? Why?
The things that matter most to me are to provide families and their kiddos with high-quality, non-toxic sensory play. Children learn through hands-on, open-ended play. Playdough is completely open-ended and provides so many benefits to children: it helps develop fine motor skills, encourages problem-solving skills, creativity and imagination, hand-eye coordination, communication and social skills, and eases anxiety.
