Community Highlights: Meet Greg Blome of Upside Down Bakery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Blome.

Greg, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My friend and old roommate, Nick Wehrle, and I started Omega PowerCreamer about five years ago in our old apartment in St. Louis. We both grew up in Belleville, IL, and had just graduated college and had full-time jobs. We wanted to do something interesting and entrepreneurial on the side. So we spent some of our free time coming up with ideas and even working at a different startup for about a year. We were getting into healthy eating at the time after having a typical college diet. We were getting into low carb and low sugar diets, and that is when we discovered bulletproof coffee. At the time, you had to put butter, coconut oil, and mct oil in your coffee separately. We thought – HEY, how about we just combine these ingredients in one bottle. That’s when the idea of PowerCreamer was born.

We started working out of our apartment to get the formulas down, which took months of testing. Once we were ready, we created a website and began making our product in SLU’s Commercial Kitchen. We eventually got our product on Amazon, came out with multiple flavors and found a co-packer to make our product instead of making it ourselves. Nick and I were roommates early on in this process. But I moved away from St. Louis for a period, and now Nick is in Rochester, Minnesota, so we are now running this business remotely. I have been back in St. Louis for almost two years. In January 2021, we actually just launched our second business called Upside Down Bakery during the pandemic. We also brought on Nick’s sister Meghan and my brother Ryan to the team.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are always ups and downs with any business, but you definitely feel those more when you own a business. Especially the low points. We have been self-funded from the start. We each put in around $4,000 to start PowerCreamer – mostly going towards ingredients and testing. We grew very well for the first few years, even reaching seven figures in revenue. We achieved this while Nick and I worked in different cities.

The past few years have been more challenging. We feel the effects of not being in the same city at times – thank goodness for Facetime! We are also facing way more competition in the keto coffee creamer space recently. We had great success being one of the very first keto coffee creamers on Amazon. The competition aspect is difficult because these businesses have way more money behind them than we do, so it forces us to be creative, run lean, and be as efficient as possible.

Of course, dealing with the pandemic was a big hurdle too – we noticed less buyer demand, issues with our supply chain, and launching our second business during this time really affected our cash flow.

As you know, we’re big fans of Upside Down Bakery. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We have two companies – Omega PowerCreamer and Upside Down Bakery. I’ll talk a little about both.

Omega PowerCreamer makes keto-friendly coffee creamers. It comes in seven different flavors, and you blend them in your coffee to make a healthy latte. You have to blend them or use a milk frother to mix it in. It’s definitely not your typical coffee creamer, but it provides some additional energy in your coffee and is a great meal replacement.

Upside Down Bakery was just started this year. We set out to flip baking on its head by making high protein, low sugar microwavable muffin, brownie, and pancake cups! They are also keto-friendly and gluten-free. They have been a hit so far, and we’re extremely happy with how they turned out. Everyone is looking for a sweet snack from time to time, and these are a great, guilt-free option for those looking to lower their sugar and carbohydrate intake.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I enjoyed hanging out with my friends playing sports, whiffle ball in the backyard, or riding our bikes around the neighborhood after school.
