Community Highlights: Meet Mel Boban of SMAL Marketing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mel Boban.

Hi Mel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
SMAL started purely as an accident out of necessity! It’s wild when I look back. I had lost my full-time agency job and was moved to part-time so I began looking for freelance work opportunities. Once I realized I could get my own clients and name my own rate, I started building up my clientele. A few months later, I left the agency entirely and the rest is history. I have been in business now for six years!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been anything but a smooth road! Setting off my own proved to be the most challenging thing I’ve ever done. As you’re making everything up without a guideline, there are a lot of times you’ll double back to change your ways. Over the years, I’ve learned that it’s okay to make changes, it’s okay to fail but to keep pressing on nonetheless.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about SMAL Marketing?
SMAL is a one-woman show (with several freelance helpers!), planning and organizing social media content for small to medium-sized businesses. The whole theme of my business is “keeping it simple” – as social media can often be over complicated and very time-consuming. I focus on making the task easy for my clients, whether I’m helping with one aspect or fully managing their pages. I’m proud of the way my brand reflects this aspect of simplicity and minimalism – as it’s one that I embrace in everyday life as well. SMAL offers help for small businesses in so many ways – we are not a one-sized fit all firm – because I truly believe that even a little bit of change to your social media feed can make a big difference.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
In my free time, I try to unplug from digital to stay inspired. I swear by releasing stress via fitness – whether it be a brisk walk or a workout class. I spend my free time teaching classes at the barre3 in Des Peres – a pilates and yoga inspired workout that is focused on mindfulness and strength. Aside from working out, I love reading and if I do listen to a podcast it’s Heather McMahan’s “Absolutely Not” podcast – she is hilarious and will have you giggling out loud.
