Community Highlights: Meet Steven Edele of Edele and Mertz Hardware

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Edele.

Hi Steven, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in St. Louis, MO. I went to Lindbergh High School. I’m telling you that because everyone in St. Louis wants to know where you went to High School. After that, I graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a Major in Political Science and Minor in Business. I graduated in 2007 and got a job selling training programs to businesses. I quickly figured out that I could not sit behind a desk all day. After that, I started interviewing at large retail corporations and figured that the job I was looking for was waiting for me at my family business, So I came back to work at Edele and Mertz Hardware and after nine years and a lot of learning I got the opportunity to buy the business and I did. I’ve owned it for almost five years and I love working here.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been as smooth at it could be. There are always a few speed bumps along the way but I have been very lucky. I have the guidance of my father who owned the business for 40 years and a great group of employees. The struggles along the way come down to growing pains and just adjusting the business to accommodate the older and younger clientele that come in.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The business is Edele and Mertz Hardware. We’ve been in business since 1912 and it’s been in the same family ever since. Our specialty is convenience and customer service. I think the customer service and knowledge of older houses is what sets us apart from other stores. I’m most proud of the customer base that we have. Myself and my employees have relationships with the customers. I try to learn everyone’s name that comes in the store. I want people to feel comfortable to come in, ask questions and ultimately get the right answer and product.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Don’t quit, there’s always going to be a challenging day in your future. Most of the time spent running a business is putting out fires all day. You just have to get used to that. I wish I knew not to stress out as much as I did in the beginning. Not to say that I don’t stress out now, which I do, but not to let the stress run your life.
