Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisa Modronja.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
For a long time, I wasn’t sure what career path I wanted to take, but I knew I always wanted to help people in some kind of way. When I was about 13-14 years old I got in to makeup. I loved doing my friend’s makeup for special occasions like school dances. It was always a hobby, I didn’t think I could turn it in to a career.
Throughout high school and parts of college, I struggled to figure out what I wanted to major in and what career path I wanted to take. I thought nursing was it for me. Once I got into the program, after a couple of semesters I realized I was not happy and ended up dropping out. I finished the rest of my community college classes, got my degree and I thought I was going to transfer to a university. At that point I was heavily in to makeup and skincare.
Watching lots of YouTube tutorials, learning techniques, researching about skincare, and becoming overall inspired with the beauty world. I was accepted to University of Missouri, St. Louis. But changed my mind about going and enrolled in to cosmetology school instead. There, I got my license as an esthetician. A little after I became licensed I got a job at a makeup store. I sell and do makeup on clients. I create different makeup looks on myself and post of social media too. I started a YouTube channel and freelance when I get an opportunity.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Starting your own business, especially an online business plus trying to build clientele can be difficult. It really takes time and does not happen overnight. I can go with posting photos of my makeup for months and not get any recognition from brands or everyday people asking me to do their makeup. This is the type of career where you have to be very consistent and not give up on yourself. There are times where I feel very unmotivated, and I wonder if I will make it to where I want to be.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a makeup artist and content creator! I have an Instagram account where I post photos of makeup looks I create and I recently started a YouTube channel too. I am newer to the industry so I am not quite up there yet like other artists. I also work at Sephora where I do makeup for clients that come in to the store and I sell products as well. I want to use those platforms to teach, build clientele, make connections with brands and everyday people. I am proud of at how far I have come. I have learned a lot and grown as a person and an artist. Every day I am getting better and learning more.
What matters most to you? Why?
I think what matters most to me is happiness. With happiness comes love, success, health and peace, plus all the other things I want to achieve. I want happiness in all that I do and all that I am surrounded by.
