Conversations with Brandie Medina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandie Medina.

Hi Brandie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was 16 and had a very vivid dream. In this dream, I was tattooing, but at the time, I was so young I had never seen anyone tattooing before. So I had no idea what was happening in my dream. That’s when the curiosity kicked in. By the 90’s I was in tattoo shops making needles and trying to learn to tattoo. The Tattoo Industry was way different back then and there were not a lot of women tattooing. The industry has evolved tremendously from those times. I continued to persevere and went from apprenticing to tattoo to professionally piercing.

The Piercing industry was far more accepting of female piercers and did not require you to sacrifice your honor to be a part of it. I was professionally pierced in Southern California until I moved to St Louis in 2008. By this time, I had four children. I worked as a nurse assistant and was attending nursing school while opening Steel and Ink Studio in 2009. I am proud to say that we will be celebrating 13 years of tattooing and piercing for St Louis in Jan 2021. Last year I was blessed to receive the 2020 Woman of Distinction Award for the St Louis area. It is a wonderful feeling to be able to create for and with St Louis every day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Lots of struggles and obstacles to overcome. Everyday we are chosen to harmonize with our community by creating designs and curations to allow the local community to express themselves. It is an honor and a blessing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an entrepreneur. I have and do create businesses. (Community Notary 2006, Steel and Ink Studio 2009 and Coffee Culture 2018). I specialize in custom tattoos and full-service piercings.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see a tremendous shift in the vibration of the tattoo and piercing industry in the next five years. Tattooing and piercing is medicine and has a multitude of uses.
