Conversations with Christa Klotz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christa Klotz. Them and their team share their story with us below:

The Selfie Room in St Louis was started in February 2018 by sisters-in-law Christa and Erika Klotz, with initially 12 " Selfie Stations or Rooms." The Selfie Room has since expanded with a total of 20 rooms; the rooms rotate themes 4 times a year to accommodate the changing seasons. Since opening in 2018, The Selfie Room has debuted over 150 themed Selfie Stations.

The Selfie Room is a safe place to play, explore, and take photos while having fun! The Selfie Room is a self-service photography studio that has featured larger-than-life props, for example, a life-size Chinese take-out box to celebrate the Chinese New Year, complete with giant chopsticks, noodles, and fortune cookies. The take-out box was later recycled into a life-size popcorn box with giant pieces. Alongside larger-than-life interactive props and backdrops, The Selfie Room is a creative space for people from all walks of life; professional photographers and beginners are welcome. The Selfie Room encourages self-expression, body positivity, and creativity for all our clients.

The Selfie Room now offers rentable items to enhance your experience. The Selfie Room can provide clients with additional services; the VIP package includes a photographer specifically for your visit, and the entire studio can be rented out for private reservations or events. The Selfie Room has hosted bachelorette and birthday parties, corporate holiday events, and a few weddings! Their " Selfie Kits" are a Bluetooth remote and a tripod combo, and their rentable props, such as crowns, tiaras, and jackets, accent any celebration. The Selfie Room is still located downtown at 1424 Washington and has plans to be a long-term member of the community, a staple tourist, and a local attraction for years to come.

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
Networking and being yourself are great ways to make a good impression as a new business in your community. Opening a new business is always filled with rough patches, but St Louis welcomed The Selfie Room and our team with open arms. Our new business was immediately picked up by a local news station and a radio station, and we’ve had several features on local blogs. Many of them have become close personal friends to this day. 2020, for many businesses, was a struggle. The Selfie Room closed for two months, then as soon as lockdowns were lifted slightly, we made client occupancy changes, increased cleaning policies, and were able to open again. We provided a safe, low-impact, and low-touch activity; clients enjoyed photo shoots at a safe distance and something positive to do during difficult times. Thankfully The Selfie Room has survived 2020, and we continue to grow within our community, hosting events with local small businesses and rescue facilities.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What sets The Selfie Room apart from other selfie-type businesses? You won’t find anything at The Selfie Room that you would at competitors. The Selfie Room is not a copycat establishment, we are not a franchise location, and all of our sets are independently designed by our team; room theme inspiration comes from everywhere, the seasons, staff inspiration, and even client suggestions. The rooms and themes are unique to our studio, and we are constantly creating new themes to bring clients opportunities for selfies and a fun and positive place to visit. I am proud of our team. We strive to excel in customer service to help clients feel good about themselves and make them feel welcome in the studio. Additionally, I enjoy helping people feel good about themselves and showing them that selfies aren’t just for models and professionals.
