Conversations with Courtney Guffey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Guffey.

Hi Courtney, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We are a husband and wife photo and film team based out of Saint Louis, Missouri. We specialize in wedding photography and videography. We started this business in 2015, and in 2018 we brought on videography, making us a team. Courtney first picked up photography in high school for fun and would take her friend’s pictures and edit them. Dylan would video his cars and his friend’s cars and edit them. Once Courtney started the business in 2015, it was shortly after she realized weddings were her absolute favorite to capture. Once I included Dylan in CMS Photography, it was also soon after he wanted to start wedding videography. Weddings bring us a ton of joy, and we truly love weddings. We love capturing love from the details leading to a wedding to the wedding day.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This is an excellent question for any entrepreneur. Is nothing smooth, right? Everything has ups and downs. Nothing is smooth. The best thing you can do in business is, to be honest. Communication is always key. Try your best at everything you do, even if you are having a hard day. Make sure to have a legal agreement that protects you and your client.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We specialize in wedding photography and videography. We also capture lifestyle sessions such as family, couples, and seniors. We are most proud of our growth. Watching us grow each year is truly rewarding. I believe what sets us apart is being a husband and wife team. Our clients have direct contact with us only since we are the ones capturing the wedding day. It makes everything easy flowing and communication stress-free.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Yes absolutely! When I first started this business. I was eager to get my feet in the door of the wedding industry. Shadowing and research was my top priority. I wanted to help in any way that was wedding related. I also learned things take time, and you won’t be the best overnight. Growth is essential.
