Conversations with Hazmat

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hazmat.

Hi Hazmat, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Our band first got together in October of 2020. Our vocalist found the other members through Instagram and we spent the first few months learning covers and then eventually started writing originals together.

In the spring, we began playing shows in our drummer’s basement and eventually moved our way up to a venue!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been a lot of struggles due to our age and the fact that we are a female band. We often aren’t taken seriously and have to push harder to prove that we are an actual band. For example, there have been venues and authority figures who have turned us away because they don’t believe we are capable of bringing out an audience or playing a good show.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are one of the few girl bands in our city and we work to create music that young people can relate to and find empowerment in. We don’t want to be squeezed into one category, but rather create our own unique sound. We strive to help people embrace being unique and being unapologetically themselves.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
We like that we found each other in this city and that it has given us many opportunities to create music and share it with others. We don’t like the obstacles we have faced, considering the fact that the music scene here is ruled by older male bands.
